A New York Times Editor's Choice 1924. George Mallory is arguably the last great British explorer, having twice triedand failedto conquer Mount Everest. The mountain has haunted him, but his attempts have captivated the hearts of a nation desperate to restore its former glory after World War I. Yet George has sworn to his wife, Ruth, that he will not mount a third attempt. He will remain with her and their three children instead of again challenging the unreachable peak. Then, one afternoon, Ruth reads a telegram addressed to George: Glad to have you aboard again. And with this one sentence, the lives of the Mallorys, and the face of the nation, are irrevocably changed. A beautifully rendered story about the need for redemption and the quest for glory, Above All Things is a captivating blend of historical fact and imaginative fiction. It is a heartbreaking tale of obsession, sacrifice, and what we do for love and honor.

1) Tagged, also Freefall by Jessica Barry and If It Bleeds by Stephen King.

2) A bit of both, neither are the top genres I go for, but I think lately I read more that have elements of fantasy or sci-if. Trying to expand and read more variety!

3) Salvation Day by Kali Wallace

I decided to read this book in honour of my sisters' upcoming Everest trek. I didn't know much about George Mallory and his attempts to conquer the mountain and I found this book to be very enlightening and totally fascinating. It started out a bit slow but by the end, I could not put it down. A compelling, well-researched, and evocative read.

Lovely to walk into a small town bookstore today, and find my good friend Tanis' book on the shelf. The bookstore itself was just lovely - a curious mix of books, board games (for local campers), fresh made popcorn and caramel corn and other goodies. I have to say, the business model appeals!

A fictionalization of George Mallory's I'll-fated Everest attempt in 1924, focussing not only on his obsessive passion, but also on the extreme toll on his wife, trying to hold the family together in his absence
