Yurika is a freelancer in the Tokyo underworld. She poses as a prostitute, carefully targeting potential johns, selecting powerful and high-profile men. When she is alone with them, she drugs them and takes incriminating photos to sell for blackmail purposes. She knows very little about the organization shes working for, and is perfectly satisfied with the arrangement, as long as it means she doesnt have to reveal anything about her identity, either. She operates alone and lives a private, solitary life, doing her best to lock away painful memories. But when a figure from Yurikas past resurfaces, she realizes there is someone out there who knows all her secrets: her losses, her motivations, her every move. There are whispers of a crime lord named Kizakia monster, she is toldand Yurika finds herself trapped in a game of cat and mouse. Is she wily enough to escape one of the most sadistic men in Tokyo? From the Hardcover edition.

#riotGrams feb 7th: my local library. I'm very lucky/privileged to have grown up with a great library system and schools with great libraries and librarians. I LOVED that my library used Overdrive for ebooks & I used it a lot. Now that they switched over to Axis360 I can only use it for audiobooks bc it doesn't support paper white readers so I'm a half-sad panda.

This was an odd book. The plot seemed disjointed to me. A little too much going on, yet a very cliche spy novel. It kept me reading til the end though, which I suppose counts for something.

"I whispered to the moon in my head, I'll show you my madness."
Not as good as its sister novel The Thief, but an interesting read nonetheless. Again, Nakamura takes the reader on an introspective journey into life and the human condition via the Japanese criminal underground, the plot being an imperfect stage in which the characters are confronted by the meaninglessness of their existence. A talented author, can't wait to read more!

"Even when the moon shrinks and disappears, it shows itself again gradually. When ancient people saw that eternal cycle of death and recovery, they prayed to the moon for their own rebirth. Rebirth. Will I be reborn? ... If I were reborn, what would I become?"
Sometimes it saddens me that I have to steal whatever time I can get to read a little. It might be better to give up reading during the work week ?

Desha No! Don't give up! Any reading is better than no reading! 😳😢❤️📚📚📚📚📚 8y
Faibka @Desha I know... Just feeling frustrated that this book that could be finished in one sitting on a weekend but decided to read during work days and it's taking forever! 😫 I think I'll reserve smaller/fast paced books for the weekend. Ugh my job is seriously interfering with my reading! 😬 the book is good though! I'll post a review soon 😄 8y
Desha I understand totally! That sounds like a good plan! Do you have a commute where you can listen to audiobooks? Sometimes I get a book on kindle and the audio version and Amazon has whispersync where it keeps track of your place between audio and print. I didn't think I would like audio books but now I totally love them lol! 😜😍❤️📚 Hang in there! Looking forward to your review! ❤️📚📚 8y

[DELETED] 3323341091 sorry to hear your reading time is so limited of late. it is hard when work bleeds over into the rest of life. you have my sympathies, i am away from home for work for the next few weeks and it completely obliterates my reading time. 8y
Faibka @Desha Yes! I'm trying to get more into audiobooks to not get so far behind. I'm still trying to get used to it though. I'm also trying to incorporate the audio while doing chores or when knitting as someone recommended 😆 8y
Faibka @fern Oh no! 😥 Hopefully you can still manage to steal away some time to get some reading done 8y
Desha Yay for audio books!! Once you get used to them you will wonder how you ever lived without them lol! 📚📚📚📚❤️ 8y

"I kept staring at the moon. I'm not sure if its light was good or evil. I thought it might not be either. The moon just shines with the light of chaos. Mysteriously. Brightly. That must not be either good or evil. Just as the rules of this world are not all good."

Desha So far do you like it more/less than The Thief? 📚❤️ 8y
Faibka @Desha Well, I'm half way through and haven't felt as pulled into the story as with The Thief which I finished in one sitting, I just couldn't put it down! To tell the truth I'm not sure what to make of it yet, but hoping to finish soon and discuss!!! 😃😃😃📚📚 8y

At 200 pages it's more of a long short story. The plot was somewhat predictable ( hookers! doublecross! fake passports!) But at the end it's noted this is Nakamura's 10th book and was to be read alongside "The thief" ( his other book) for cross over characters.

I'm still not sure what happened in this story. We get involved in the underbelly of a mob-like crime ring, our protagonist somehow escapes death at every corner, and nothing is as it seems. And yet I couldn't put the thing down. A quick and entertaining read.
