Cathedral
Cathedral | Raymond Carver
Raymond Carvers third collection of stories, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, including the canonical titular story about blindness and learning to enter the very different world of another. These twelve stories mark a turning point in Carvers work and overflow with the danger, excitement, mystery and possibility of life. . . . Carver is a writer of astonishing compassion and honesty. . . . his eye set only on describing and revealing the world as he sees it. His eye is so clear, it almost breaks your heart (Jonathan Yardley,Washington Post Book World).

When I was in high school, an English teacher of mine suggested I read the short story “Cathedral” by Raymond Carver. Upon finishing it, I immediately went out and bought the whole collection and devoured it. His stories are dark and tense and unsettling and I loved every second of this book.

Kimberlone Read this one and “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” in my short story class in college. Still have never read the collections they come from, but that needs to change! 6y
Pasteluniverse @Kimberlone Oh yeah, that‘s a great one too! 6y

#80s @ValerieAndBooks Has been posting about Bright Lights ,Big City. I pulled some Vintage Contemporaries from the shelves. The earliest ones have the white wrap around. Found the Carver and the Brodkey at a church sale this weekend.Have read the Carver years ago but not the Brodkey.

batsy Nice! 7y
Blaire I have that same edition of a fan‘s notes - picked up in a dc used book store in DuPont circle 7y
Leftcoastzen @Blaire I liked the book but what‘s funny is people either seem to love it or hate it. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Leftcoastzen very cool! That is a collection now 😊. I think I might have a couple other vintage contemporaries from that era —will look tomorrow! 7y
ValerieAndBooks I just looked and it is only Bright Lights Big City on my shelves. But I might have one or two of that type of cover buried somewhere in my TBR piles. 7y

A short story a day keeps the doctor away. Carver was truly a masterful storyteller.

I love everything about Raymond Carver. I think that his blunt writing style is amazing. I just read his poem "After -Glow" during my poetry class and it made me miss his work. I want to read more of his work. I want to read more poems. I wish that I went to college when he was a guest lecturer at Syracuse University. I would be there every day.

Carver shakes the title of being a minimalist. The stories are all great, but the title story surpasses.
