Starry River of the Sky
Starry River of the Sky | Grace Lin
The moon is missing from the remote Village of Clear Sky, but only a young boy named Rendi seems to notice! Rendi has run away from home and is now working as a chore boy at the village inn. He can't help but notice the village's peculiar inhabitants and their problems-where has the innkeeper's son gone? Why are Master Chao and Widow Yan always arguing? What is the crying sound Rendi keeps hearing? And how can crazy, old Mr. Shan not know if his pet is a toad or a rabbit? But one day, a mysterious lady arrives at the Inn with the gift of storytelling, and slowly transforms the villagers and Rendi himself. As she tells more stories and the days pass in the Village of Clear Sky, Rendi begins to realize that perhaps it is his own story that holds the answers to all those questions. Newbery Honor author Grace Lin brings readers another enthralling fantasy featuring her marvelous full-color illustrations. Starry River of the Sky is filled with Chinese folklore, fascinating characters, and exciting new adventures.

“Then he noticed the difference. The guests in this palace were feeding one another!”

Another master retelling of Chinese fairytales and legends that leaves me a little wiser, a little kinder, and more appreciative of the art of story telling and how it brings us all closer!

Weave with traditional Chinese folk stories, this is a fantasy tale about the negativity of anger and the power of forgiveness. In this tale, the #moon is missing from a remote village but only a young boy named Rendi seems to notice! Filled with fascinating characters and adventures that middle graders will enjoy.

Oh wow, there's so much to chew on and think about in this book. While I have complicated feelings about forgiveness, I also appreciated what Lin does in terms of approaching families and personal growth.

Rendi!!!!! Learn to accept love!!!!!

(I mentioned to book club that "everyone always leaves me; love is a lie" + "I would leave if only I could" is an A+ emotional conflict for me when done well because I LOVE it when characters get to be astonished by love and generosity.)

This was so much fun to read aloud to my 3rd graders after just having finished Where the Mountain Meets the Moon! They loved that book and were just as enchanted by this one with its stories-within-the-story format and heartfelt lessons of forgiveness and learning to let go. The 2 books are connected—great opportunity to practice compare and contrast and making inferences. Kiddos and I are excited to start book 3, When the Sea Turned to Silver!
