Enchanted Air
Enchanted Air: Two Cultures, Two Wings: A Memoir | Margarita Engle
13 posts | 14 read | 9 to read
In this poetic memoir, which won the Pura Belpr Author Award, was a YALSA Nonfiction Finalist, and was named a Walter Dean Myers Award Honoree, acclaimed author Margarita Engle tells of growing up as a child of two cultures during the Cold War. Margarita is a girl from two worlds. Her heart lies in Cuba, her mothers tropical island country, a place so lush with vibrant life that it seems like a fairy tale kingdom. But most of the time she lives in Los Angeles, lonely in the noisy city and dreaming of the summers when she can take a plane through the enchanted air to her beloved island. Words and images are her constant companions, friendly and comforting when the children at school are not. Then a revolution breaks out in Cuba. Margarita fears for her far-away family. When the hostility between Cuba and the United States erupts at the Bay of Pigs Invasion, Margaritas worlds collide in the worst way possible. How can the two countries she loves hate each other so much? And will she ever get to visit her beautiful island again?

Beautiful memoir in verse: Engle writes about her childhood and adolescence throughout the 1950s and 60s - polio, the Cold War, visiting her relatives in Cuba, skipping 2 levels in school, and traveling with parents to Europe.

My knowledge on the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Cold War is very limited, and I am thankful to read Margarita Engle‘s childhood experiences growing up in two different cultures and countries. This memoir has encouraged me to search for other memoirs of the author‘s experiences during this time period.

I‘m a huge Margarita Engle fan, and smiled when I saw this was my #BookSpin pick for November. She‘s a genius at sharing historical stories through poetry. Thought this poem from her memoir-in-verse would resonate with the Litsy crowd. 💕

megnews Love it! 3y
TheAromaofBooks I can remember being old enough to go up to the third floor in our library - nonfiction - so different from the bright and cheery children's library in the basement. It was magical!! 3y

This is the second book I've read by Engle, and once again I am impressed by her ability to weave a story through poetry. I would recommend to any Woodson fans.

The beautiful cover was enough to make me love this book but the words inside were just as endearing. Written in verse, this memoir about the author‘s childhood as a Cuban-American is filled with vivid images of both the island and her California home.

A #memoir told in verse, Enchanted Air tells the story of Margarita Engle's Cuban-American family and her childhood during the Cold War. Engle's words are powerful and emotionally evocative. With each vignette, she brings to life her fond memories of rural Cuba and her fearful remembrances of living in America during the Cuban Missile Crisis. This is definitely a must-read for readers who love memoirs told in verse.

litmuggle I'd never heard of this and shortly before that was when my family immigrated and they never talked about it so I will have to read this. 7y

The daughter's summer reading list for school

saresmoore Good grief. I mean, it's rich and diverse, but what a world we live in. 7y
OrangeMooseReads That is some heavy reading 😲 7y
LauraBeth @saresmoore These are the times that I'd like to be an English teacher - so I could make my own recommendations 😀 7y

saresmoore @LauraBeth Now that would be a rewarding job! 7y
LitLogophile How excellent to have a reading list ?. I always read library books over summer, but no one in my house read --- so I used the "judge-it-by-the-cover" method until high school to find "good" books. 7y
lamaman2boys Between Shades of Grey was so good. Heartbreaking, but beautiful. 7y
Cinfhen I was always wayyyy more excited by my kids summer reading lists!!!! 7y
Johanna414 This is a good list! Books that will be educational and eye-opening, but also enjoyable 7y
LeahBergen Whoa. That looks HEAVY. How many does she have to read?!? 7y
TrishB @Cinfhen me too!! 7y
minkyb That is so true @Cinfhen 😂😂 7y
Suet624 Jeez, Louise! I'm not sure I could handle those books at that age. 7y
Nerdfins I remember reading Warriors Don't Cry. I loved it. 7y
readinginthedark Are they all required or is it recommended? My mom used to make summer reading lists for me, but I could pick and choose and fill in other books I wanted, too. 7y
LauraBeth @readinginthedark she only has to read one but I may do what your mom did and add in my own for her to read as well 😎 7y
LauraBeth @Nerdfins I'd like to read that one 7y
LauraBeth @Suet624 I know! I couldn't have handled it either! 7y
LauraBeth @LeahBergen only one, so not too bad! 7y
LauraBeth @Johanna414 I can tell it's a good list because I want to read them! 😀 7y
LauraBeth @Cinfhen, @TrishB, @minkyb 😂😂 me too! My daughter has always been a very heavy reader but a few months ago she stopped. I'm sure she'll go back to it because she has always enjoyed it but it has been troubling for me to see it. This was a kid who would beg for new books. Now I can't get her to go to the bookstore. Needless to say - she was less than enthused about having to read ☹️ 7y
LauraBeth @lamaman2boys she has actually read that one! Now I want to read it because so many people recommend it 😀 7y
LauraBeth @lostlogophile you sound a lot like how I was! I never had a reading list so I just went to the library and randomly chose books to read over the summer 😀 7y
LauraBeth @saresmoore it could be! 7y
readinginthedark @LauraBeth It's a good way to introduce kids to new books and authors! I think I'll try it when my son starts reading and picking out his own books. Right now, I'm basically picking half of them anyway. (edited) 7y
