"BRILLIANT DOES NOT EVEN BEGIN TO DESCRIBE THE SHAARA GIFT. THANK GODS AND GENERALS THAT IT WAS PASSED FROM FATHER TO SON".--Atlanta Journal & Constitution"LIVELY, FAST-PACED . . . A worthy companion to The Killer Angels . . . Shaara brilliantly charts the war, the exploits of the combatants and their motivations. He also concisely shows how the early parts of the campaign unfolded. His accounts of the battles of Williamsburg, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville are exciting. . . . Though the story of the Civil War has been told many times, this is the rare version that conveys what it must have felt like".--Chicago Sun-Times"SHAARA'S BEAUTIFULLY SENSITIVE NOVEL DELVES DEEPLY into the empathetic realm of psycho-history, where enemies do not exist--just mortal men forced to make crucial decisions and survive on the same battlefield. . . . [He] succeeds with his historical novel through fully realized characters who were forced to decide their loyalties amid the horrors of their divided nation".--San Francisco Chronicle"The battle of Gettysburg featured a cast of characters dramatically and poignantly portrayed in Michael Shaara's The Killer Angels. This new novel by his son Jeff Shaara describes the interconnected paths that brought these men together at this crossroads of our history. Readers of The Killer Angels won't want to miss Gods and Generals".--James McPherson, Author of Battle Cry of Freedom

This prequel to "The Killer Angels" is highly commendable. It features numerous characters that reappear in the subsequent narrative. The work explores several analogous themes, including family dynamics, friendship, the complexities of decision-making, the institution of slavery, and the contrasting perspectives of the Union and Confederacy.

Day 17 of #20series20days is a series started by Michael Shaara and later finished by his son. Tagged book covers the Eastern Theater of the Civil War, Manassas to Chancellorsville. Photo is from South Mountain near Antietam.

Fun fact: my friend and I are such Civil War geeks, we both brought the Gettysburg movie to the beach! Yes we watched it, but it took two nights.

megnews My third great grandfather died at Antietam. My kids and I walked through the West Woods where his regiment was positioned. Hallowed ground. 4y

Texreader I have some of the Shaara books but haven‘t read them yet. I‘ve toured the battlefields at Antietam and Vicksburg twice. I had several ancestors who fought 4y

If you‘re a fan of historical fiction then I suggest this book. It made me feel like I was actually there with the men that decided our country‘s fate.

This is a story about the American Civil War, but it's different from others I've read. This book does not focus on the politics, the events leading up to this war, it focusses on the militairy leaders of both North and South. This story portrays them as men with 'normal' emotions.
I really liked this book and will certainly be reading the other two books in this trilogy

Took a day of from work today to have some much needed 'me-time' (=reading time without people around)...
So here I am sitting in our car waiting for my boyfriend who has an appointment with the doctor and I forgot my book 😕
I have a feeling I'm doing something wrong here 🤔

laurieluna Do you use an e reader? Most have apps now! X 7y
KaatjeH @miralunasbooknook an e reader is looking looking like a better idea with every minute I'm sitting here... Thanks😊 7y
laurieluna @KaatjeH honestly my kindle app has saved my sanity a couple of times when in situations like that. I can sit with my own thoughts, but if it gets to over an hour I start going a bit crazy! X 7y

Artillery demonstration at Antietam battlefield. This book is the poster child for "don't judge a book by its movie." This site is one of my favorite places to visit when I have a little extra time, and today there's no fee!
