Coming of the Third Reich
Coming of the Third Reich | Richard J Evans
There is no story in twentieth-century history more important to understand than Hitler s rise to power and the collapse of civilization in Nazi Germany. With The Coming of the Third Reich, Richard Evans, one of the world s most distinguished historians, has written the definitive account for our time. A masterful synthesis of a vast body of scholarly work integrated with important new research and interpretations, Evans s history restores drama and contingency to the rise to power of Hitler and the Nazis, even as it shows how ready Germany was by the early 1930s for such a takeover to occur. The Coming of the Third Reich is a masterwork of the historian s art and the book by which all others on the subject will be judged."

Non fiction about Germany, Europe, and what factors post wwi lead to the political situation in Germany. Extremely interesting. And also terrifying to see how something like this happens and how close it comes to our own political reality.

In the words of Lin Manuel Miranda: “Between all the bleeding and fighting I‘ve been reading writing”

Now is a more important time than ever to read, learn, and apply our knowledge. And to fight and fight and keep fighting.

Samplergal Truth. I‘ve already called the UN and all my representatives this am. Calling The Hague next. 7y
HotMessJess @Samplergal another great way (if you‘re inside the us like myself) is to text resist to the resist bot at 50409 to contact your local representatives. I had a fax sent to Gov. Jerry Brown at 630 this morning with resist bots help. 7y
Samplergal @HotMessJess oh I do that daily. Did you hear that the Nielsen woman is drafting new policy to not pull kids from parents? If that goes thru, we still have 10,000 that aren‘t the US children that need returned. I‘m embarrassed by my country. 7y
HotMessJess @Samplergal I found out about it yesterday! But Nielsen‘s damage is done. I hope her, and Lewandowski‘s (ESPECIALLY) careers are in shambles after this. They don‘t even deserve to clean toilets. I‘m ashamed to be a US citizen. I am infuriated and I‘m not letting this admin get away with this. Any of them. Down to exec assistants. I‘d fight life and death for these children right now. 7y
Samplergal @HotMessJess yes to all! Fascism has arrived in America. 7y

Coming of the Third Reich | Richard J Evans

So right now I'm super into Nazis getting sucker punched. (Thanks, masked hero who punched Richard Spencer! This and the Women's March are honestly the main things keeping me going right now.) My husband has recommended that I read Evans's trilogy of histories about the Third Reich, which I will definitely start soon. But I would also love to read shorter tales of resistance against fascism. Fiction or nonfiction! Any recs, good people of Litsy?

Notafraidofwords City of Women is one I read that sort of highlights small resistances we make against evil. However, it's not super outright about it. Check it out ! 8y
mklong Check out Code Name Verity! It is wonderful, but be prepared to cry your face off. 8y
catieohjoy @Notafraidofwords Ooh thanks! That one sounds good! 8y

catieohjoy @mklong Thank you! I bought that in an Audible sale a while ago and haven't listened to it yet, so I'll have to move it up in my queue. :) 8y
Weaponxgirl Think of the most tense thriller about a amazing woman spy and then realise it's all true! 8y
Weaponxgirl Another lady spy for you 😀 no I'm not obsessed with reading about women who did amazing things! 8y

Want to understand fascism? READ THIS! Want to understand Nazi Germany? READ THIS! This should be required reading for anyone who wants to argue politics and bring up the Nazis, for anyone interested in political history, and for anyone curious about Germany, WWII, or modern history. Good narrator.
