The Blazing World | Margaret Cavendish

Fantastische boek over een 17de eeuwse Utopische wereld, waar de hoofdpersonage de keizerin ervan wordt. Het verhaal is vol met referenties naar alchemie, astronomische theorieën en esoterisme, maar ook maatschappelijke thema's.

Not too sure what I shall think about this book. I appreciate it as one of the first sci-fi stories and wirtten by a highly educated woman. But I don't really know what to think about all those philosophical parts. Most of them are rather out-dated or way over my head. I did not like the last part (apart from the female friendship), that was only about war and builing strong weapons. But Ant-Man und Spider-Man made me smile 😉

For 1666 I have to give it to the writer. It's definitely something unusual eye opening and full of surprising scenes, creatures and ideas. However, it can also drag in parts. We had a great time talking about it though. Here is what we thought on the 35th episode of the Mind Duck Books Podcast: http://bit.ly/3HkKV8c

There isn‘t much narrative drive to this story. The protagonist is taken to a strange new world and spends the whole time bandying about the latest scientific ideas for reasons that are not entirely clear to me. And the sentences take FOREVER. I‘m out.

Lindy I been curious about this classic. Thanks for taking one for the team. 😉 2y
rabbitprincess @Lindy Even on Serial Reader it was quite the slog 😕 2y

The world-building here was interesting if not a bit lengthy and philosophical; the latter half of the book felt very political and I sort of lost interest there. The audiobook definitely helped me to power through it.

“she spent most of her time in the study of Natural Causes and Effects, which was her chief delight and pastime; and that she loved to discourse sometimes with the most Learned persons of that World”

I've read a lot of #weirdbooks throughout my life. Some I loved, but am still processing (Lanark, Third Policeman, Raw Shark Texts), some I really disliked and want to forget forever (quite a few comics/graphic novels)... my current weird read is touted as one of the first sci-fi novels and it incredibly bizarre. Still on the fence on whether or not I'm liking it. 😄 #somethingforsept #septphotochallenge

I nearly read this last year for my book bingo category "written before 1700." Instead, I read The Winter's Tale (because I knew I would be reading Jeanette Winterson's retelling, The Gap of Time). Now that I've read Margaret the First, I am even more keen to read Cavendish.

Ms.Story Love the idea of "book bingo"! Where do you find these?! ? 8y
Lindy @BrittanysBookshelf Google search "BOTNS book bingo" & refresh the screen for a new card combo. Created by Ann & Michael of Books on the Nightstand podcast. 8y
Lizpixie My local library makes book bingo cards and you can post a pic of your finished card on their Facebook page to win a prize. 8y

Lindy @Lizpixie Have you participated? 8y
Lizpixie @Lindy yep. I've finished about half of the card so far. 8y
Lindy @Lizpixie Be sure to post a photo of it on Litsy when you're done, in addition to your library's site. 😀 8y
Ms.Story @Lindy thanks so much! Sounds like a fun challenge 👍🏻😊 8y
