A Bookpage Best Books of 2012 pickThe enchanting story of a midwestern girl who escapes a family tragedy and is remade as a movie star during Hollywoods golden age.In 1920, Elsa Emerson, the youngest and blondest of three sisters, is born in idyllic Door County, Wisconsin. Her family owns the Cherry County Playhouse, and more than anything, Elsa relishes appearing onstage, where she soaks up the approval of her father and the embrace of the audience. But when tragedy strikes her family, her acting becomes more than a childs game of pretend. While still in her teens, Elsa marries and flees to Los Angeles. There she is discovered by Irving Green, one of the most powerful executives in Hollywood, who refashions her as a serious, exotic brunette and renames her Laura Lamont. Irving becomes Lauras great love; she becomes an Academy Award-winning actressand a genuine movie star. Laura experiences all the glamour and extravagance of the heady pinnacle of stardom in the studio-system era, but ultimately her story is a timeless one of a woman trying to balance career, family, and personal happiness, all while remaining true to herself.Ambitious and richly imagined, Laura Lamonts Life in Pictures is as intimateand as bigger-than-lifeas the great films of the golden age of Hollywood. Written with warmth and verve, it confirms Emma Straubs reputation as one of the most exciting new talents in fiction.

Mehso-so

This book chronicles the life of Elsa Emerson/ Laura Lamont in Hollywood. I liked her character‘s growth and her relationships with her family members, both in Wisconsin and Hollywood. There are issues of the real versus the reel, homosexuality, love, and how family and the film industry function. But I still felt something was missing. Maybe it was too much to cover or not enough about the thoughts of other characters. #booked2020 #setinhollywood

Really excited about all my choices in newest book haul, but this book immediately goes to the top of my TBR. Starts off in the 1920‘s and the main character is from one of my favorite places in Wisconsin 😍

Nute And there's an author endorsement by Lorrie Moore on the cover. Yay! 6y
ofclumsywords @Nute I‘ve never heard of her before but I‘ll have to look her up! 6y

A fascinating snapshot of old Hollywood glamour and one young actress navigating through it. It follows her life across several decades and the people who weave in and out of it, touching on family dynamics and identity or the construction of identity along the way.

This book may be a 5 star for me. I love this golden age of Hollywood story, and now I'm intrigued with the woman who was part of the inspiration for it-Jennifer Jones.
I'm just so sad it's over 💕😭👍🏻

A beautiful, literary fifty-plus year saga of girl from Door County named Elsa who became Laura Lamont of old Hollywood. Straub's other, The Vacationers, was one of my 2015 favorites. I can't wait to read Modern Lovers which released just recently. For fans of Lily King, Lorrie Moore, Alice Munro.
