This book is not for the casual reader, antiquated language rhythms & high level vocabulary permeate this philosophically sad tale of Octavian Nothing--a black man at the time of the Revolutionary War, who seeking escape of bondage, goes to war with the Red Coats against the Rebels. It is there he learns the sad truth--in 1776, he belongs with neither. Moving & sad this book was also slow & difficult to read.
