The Cobra Event
The Cobra Event | Richard Preston
8 posts | 14 read | 22 to read
The Cobra Event is set in motion one spring morning in New York City, when a seventeen-year-old student wakes up feeling vaguely ill. Hours later she is having violent seizures, blood is pouring out of her nose, and she has begun a hideous process of self-cannibalization. Soon, other gruesome deaths of a similar nature have been discovered, and the Centers for Disease Control sends a forensic pathologist to investigate. What she finds precipitates a federal crisis. The details of this story are fictional, but they are based on a scrupulously thorough inquiry into the history of biological weapons and their use by civilian and military terrorists. Richard Preston's sources include members of the FBI and the United States military, public health officials, intelligence officers in foreign governments, and scientists who have been involved in the testing of strategic bioweapons. The accounts of what they have seen and what they expect to happen are chilling. The Cobra Event is a dramatic, heart-stopping account of a very real threat, told with the skill and authority that made Preston's The Hot Zone an internationally acclaimed bestseller. From the Trade Paperback edition.

This was a really good read!

After two people die following violent seizures and evidence of self cannibalisation, the CDC send one of their pathologists to investigate. She uncovers that these are not just cases signalling an epidemic, but something more sinister. Someone is testing bioweapons and it is likely that the scale of attacks will continue to increase.

This got me another 2 hours for #20in4 and was my pick for #PosedByTheBook #Cobra

Andrew65 Sounds good, and a good start 👏👏👏 3y

I am off for all of this! Which makes a change and I might actually make it to 20 hours haha

I did some reading of The Cobra Event today (maybe around 4 hours) so I would like to finish this (I‘m at 69% and around 2 hrs left of the book) and then maybe finish another read. Probably Stolen Kingdom so I can catch up with my fairy tale challenge!

#20in4

Andrew65 Sounds a great plan, good luck 😊👍 3y

If you're stressing about the current pandemic crisis, this is NOT the book to read. It reminds me a lot of early Crichton books like The Andromeda Strain or The Terminal Man, very straight forward almost non-fiction in style. Also, it was great to have male and female lead characters work together without it leading to a romantic situation. 4 💥💥💥💥 1/2

Morr_Books A friend gave me his The Demon in the Freezer a couple months ago and have been debating if I can bring myself to read it. 5y
RamsFan1963 @Morr_Books I read The Hot Zone like 20 years ago and I remember loving it. I've got his most recent book, Crisis in the Red Zone, on library hold now. I love his writing style. 5y
Bklover Definitely want to read this!! Stacked! 5y
Buechersuechtling Aaaaawww, “The Andromeda Strain”‼️😍 (This shall express my feeling of completely having forgotten this book until you mentioned it and then remembering immediately how deeply it impressed me when I read it about, uhm, 25 years ago. 😊) 5y

Hmmmm I wonder??🤔🤔🤔

Something else to consider during our current crisis. I'm not a conspiracy nut, but I wonder if the current coronavirus could be an escaped biological weapon??

Buechersuechtling Please no‼️😱 5y
Buechersuechtling Additionally, might not be the smartest thing to ask but which military division would do so, develop a virus as a weapon against which those who developed it don‘t even have a vaccine or an antidote❓🤔 5y
Reggie How are you feeling? 5y

swynn Actually I have a colleague who is a conspiracy nut, and from I know that this really is a thing, that coronavirus might be a leaked bioweapon. Also that the motive in leaking it might have been to influence the 2020 election. I kid you not. 5y
RamsFan1963 @Reggie I'm feeling solid again, it was just a touch of cold/flu. Thankfully nothing more serious 5y
RamsFan1963 @swynn I could see that, convince people to stay home and not vote, or rig up some voting from home thing that could be easily hacked. I'm sure Trump would be thrilled to just cancel the election and let him do 4 more years. 5y
RamsFan1963 @Buechersuechtling Not so much the military as the CIA and the NSA having control over biological weapons. The US was supposed to dismantle their bioweapons program under Nixon, but I'm sure there's some black ops program running to make sure we're not the only nation without those kind of weapons 5y

My goodness!! Doesn't he paint a lovely picture? I think "endless Gregorian chant of smell" will join my list of choice phrases.

RamsFan1963 @audraelizabeth I was sent home early from work today, running a slight fever, coughing and throwing up. For everyone's safety, we agreed it was best that I go home. So I'm laying in bed reading a book about a deadly virus lol 5y
audraelizabeth Oh I'm sorry. Feel better soon. My jadon is sick with strep throat. 5y
Lreads I‘m sorry you‘re not feeling well. I hope you can get some rest and feel better soon. 💕 5y

Been wanting to read this one for awhile now and was so glad to finally find it at my local library. Also picked up The Sun is Also a Star - heard good things about that. I hope I enjoy it.

Based on this book's plausibility, I experienced tremors of fear: biological weapons. A man genetically engineers a new fatal disease that makes its victims feverishly crazy before death. Gruesome and very violent at times. Some technical language. Pair with: Jack Daniel's TN Honey, straight.

TheLondonBookworm Sounds like a plan for my Friday night! 8y
