The Warrior's Apprentice | Lois McMaster Bujold

After failing to pass the physicals for the Barrayaran Military Academy, the brittle-boned, dwarfish son of Cordelia and Aral Vorkosigan uses a clever touch of creativity to finance a shipment of munitions into a war zone. When this simple merchant expedition draws the attention of an unexpected enemy, Miles is forced to masquerade as commander of a fictional fleet of hired guns he names after the mountains near his home--the Dendarii Mercenaries. His original crew of misfits grows into a considerable force as enemies become allies, guided by the delicate political manoeuvrings Miles learned from his father. Miles' ability to think himself out of a tight spot makes him a natural - if unlikely - leader, but this adventure in deep space is just a warm-up. On his homeworld of Barrayar, a deadly plot has been hatched against his father, Aral. A carefully planned trap is being laid, and only the wiles of the empire's unlikeliest hero can thwart it

I did a reread of this book from the Vorkosigan series, one of my very favourite sci-fi series. This time around, I listened to the audiobook, superbly narrated by Grover Gardner.

This is my #1986 entry for the #192025 challenge. @Librarybelle

It also brings me to 8 hours and 40 minuets for the #20in4 readathon. @Andrew65

kwmg40 A question for Vorkosigan fans ... who the heck are these characters on the cover? I assume Miles is the one sitting down. Are the others Elena and Bazil? I hope Elena had time to change her shoes before heading into those space battles! 😅 2y
Andrew65 That‘s some cover! Well done 👏👏👏 2y

This was well written, but I just couldn‘t connect with the characters or the story. Glad I gave it a shot though! I‘d heard so much about this one.

I love a good heist novel and this feels kind of like an accidental heist to me. Miles manages to get himself into a tricky situation that requires all his ingenuity to survive despite his physical limitations. I like that Miles is not fully able bodied and yet he is unquestionably the hero of this tale. I enjoyed this although it can be a little problematic with regards to gender sensitivity.

HeyT @TheAromaofBooks I forgot to mention that this was my #DoubleSpin selection for January. 4y

#BookReport
So far the new year has started off right as I‘ve finished two books that were both great. I wasn‘t sure about either but loved every minute.

#WeeklyForecast
My goal this week is to finish Warrior‘s Apprentice and then move on to my project of finishing series I‘ve started in the past. Thinking about working on The Expanse first.

Welp it's that time again because @TheAromaofBooks has posted the #BookSpin reminder here's my list. I'm still not quite up to the stress of reading for bingo but I'm excited to know what the two picks for November will be.

Erinsuereads Same here though! The bingo is a lot! 4y
TheAromaofBooks Yay!! Bingo isn't for everyone!! I just put a bunch of books I “need“ to read that month anyway to help me make progress. 😂 4y
HeyT @TheAromaofBooks I've turned into a mood reader lately so I try to only have four books I have to read per month. 4y

Book 3 complete! #24in48 #24in48readathon

This is the 4th Vorkosigan novel I've read and I keep expecting to hit one that's not at the same level in quality to the first, but Lois McMaster Bujold has managed to knock it out of the park 4 times now. I hope it keeps up through the next 8.

I thought I would take the #riotgrams #freebie tag literally. This book was given to me by my fave bookstore owner. He and I have similar tastes and when he found out I'd not read SF since reading some hideous books in high school, he forced this into my hands with a guarantee I'd like it.

I loved it, and it got me hooked on SF once more. That was about 15 years ago. Thank you, R. 🖤

I've been binge listening to this wonderful character driven science fiction series lately...for about the sixth time. The printed versions are great, but for me, Grover Gardner is *the* voice of Miles Naismith Vorkosigan. This book is a great place to jump into the series.
