What if baby Superman had crashed on the wrong side of the Iron Curtain and grew up to become Stalin's right-hand man? Alive with historical figures and a host of familiar superheroes, including Batman and Wonder Woman as you've never seen them before, this superb graphic novel takes the arms race and infuses it with the thrilling powers of Kryptonite.

That. ENDING. 😮 I'll admit, I wasn't totally feeling it for a good portion. Perhaps it's recent American history, or just American history as a whole, or my distance from the Cold War, but my main thought for much of the book was 'it's downright bizarre to see the binary thinking of if Superman were raised in the Soviet Union he would have turned into a despot and of course that would never happen in the U.S.' 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? Being raised on propaganda and being guided by suspect political influences to do wrong in the name of an ideology feels like something that could easily happen in the U.S. today.
Definitely some parallels with the Injustice storyline, Superman in a position of power for the good, which is warped, Batman heading the underground insurrection.

Robotswithpersonality 3/3 But the one-two punch of the ending, the letter bringing it home, the line of succession and Luthor's part in it, those names and that plan, the cycle of humanity's decisions?! Damn. I get why this one looms large in people's recommendations of Superman comics. 6mo

What if Kal-El had landed in the Soviet Union and not the USA? A simple yet brilliant premise executed in almost flawless fashion. Brief, only three issues each covering an era roughly a decade apart, chronicles SUPERMAN as avatar of Russian exceptionalism, while Luthor opposes him as an American patriot. No easy morality, this story deftly balances many shades of grey, expertly rendered. Highly recommended!

This 3 comic miniseries raises the question of what Superman would be like if he landed in Russia instead of the USA. He's already an adult working along with Stalin when we start the narrative & this book adds in the usual players in the Superman mythos - Jimmy Olsen, Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, & Wonder Woman - and a few historical figures. However, this feels too short. We get .001% of his childhood, the paths of historical figures differs, ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick ⬆️and while the Superman story arc is different, it isn't varied enough and I found it rather boring. If a story is going to explore a "what if" or a "dual timeline" situation, I need them to be vastly different otherwise, why bother? @TheAromaofBooks #bookspinbingo This also covers a book someone else picks, book to movie, a color in the title, & takes place in another country for #summerfunjr bingo @staycurious 4y

sharread 🤯😱That cover. 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @sharread This was art inside the graphic novel, so either an end photo or cover for an individual comic within the series. I wish I could say the book was as sinister as this art makes it seem, because this was my favorite of the propaganda pieces. 4y

Thanks for the tag, @Eggs !

🤨 Not sure how I feel about this one. I'm 1/3 through this graphic novel and it's different than I expected. My boyfriend picked it for me to read and oh boy! There's a movie to watch, too! 🙄

@aperfectmjk @ReadingFeedsTheSoul Would you like to play?

Eggs You‘re welcome ❣️ 4y
aperfectmjk Oh no! You're bf picked it so now you have no choice. But how lucky are you that your significant other enjoys reading. Mine is just into cars. YouTube videos all day about cars. 🙄 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @aperfectmjk I showed him the summer fun bingo card and he said he'd pick a book for the challenge of reading a book someone else chose for you. I hoped he'd just pull from the bottom of one of my many piles. 😁 He actually doesn't read much, but collects comics. A few of these more eventful books he'll read. He's much more of a TV/movie guy and has other hobbies like 3-D printing & gundam models. Nearly done now and it got a little better. 4y

I've never been a big Superman fan, but this story is one of the exceptions. Mark Millar's cold war masterpiece is probably my favorite Superman story. What would have happened if Kal-El's pod crashed in the USSR instead of Kansas? What steps would the USA have taken to counter the sudden superiority of Soviet power? Read this beauty and find out.

madamereadsalot1 I liked that one too! And also this one! 5y

Re-read. I love this book so much! It's my favourite Superman from after 1965. Love it!

Millar sets the comic up really well, using an interesting premise. The pacing has that Marvel/DC issue where it jumps around everywhere and spends no time developing anything. The story beats are hit fast and hard, with no time given to savor it. Maybe that's a style that people like, but it's not my thing. The characters are boring, but I'm beginning to wonder if Superman & Wonder Woman are just boring characters by their nature

Was able to read this all in one sitting. It flows really well. The comic is divided up into 3 sections: superman' origins, his adult life and the ending which I must say is really the best part. So, what makes this so different? Well, Supes landed in Communist Soviet Union era under Stalin instead of in American Kansas. Interesting concept and I enjoyed it over all. Batman was completely different than usual. Worth a read if you like Superman
