Mehso-so

That was...A LOT, but I wanted more. I can see real potential in a storyline where Superman actually has to confront mortality. I also like the idea of exploring the near/far future with the Superman cast of characters. I'll admit I'm not as 'up' on his lore as I might claim to be aware of Batman's so that might hamper my appreciation of some of the storylines included here - particularly my lack of interest in anything Bizarro. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? I just didn't feel good about the fact that after the reveal Lois wouldn't accept that Clark and Superman were the same person, even if, yeah, they needed to have a long conversation about how much he'd lied to her in canon! Similarly the whole idea that his closest friends at the newspaper would not see it at the last. Such a lonely notion that he wouldn't be seen for who he was as a whole even when possibly(?) dying. 5mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? It's probably a side effect of just having read the powerfully infuriating but emotionally complex Luthor as characterized in Superman Birthright, but this Luthor felt like a court jester of bad decisions and obliviousness in comparison. Not that that can't be a whole villain vibe, it just seems a little paltry in comparison. 5mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/? I don't know that the story needed the addition of a set of Herculean tasks to further underline Superman's value to the world, I would have been happier to see a more emotionally resonant, intimate picture of his possible(?) final days. The search for a cure or replacements was enough clutter without also introducing new challenges. 5mo
Robotswithpersonality 5/5 And I know I'm a broken record at this point, but the art? Maybe it's just the circumstances: aging, illness, distress featuring so highly, but I again found myself unsettled by a lot of the faces and bodies. Could be on purpose! 🤷🏼‍♂️ 5mo

Morrison portrays Superman not only as a hero but as a scientist and a kind of sun god who, like in a Greek epic, journeys to the underworld before returning. I'm not a huge fan of Frank Quitely's art, especially the way he draws teeth.

Morrison's All Star Superman's twelve issues mirror the twelve labors of Hercules. It strikes a strange balance between wacky and poignant as Superman contemplates his legacy. Morrison covers all the bases--time travel, other dimensions, and a final showdown with Lex Luthor.

This is the Superman story for people who do not understand Superman. It is also the story for people who love Superman. In addition to being a unique character study, and a send up to the Silver Age of comics, it is also a gripping tale that will make you not want to put it down. Grant Morrison captures the wonder, charm, and ultimate goodness of the most famous superhero of all time. A great experience for everyone.

Saturday morning. The fabulous Louis Armstrong in the legendary Hot Fives & Sevens recordings. One of the greatest Superman stories in the last couple of decades. It might feel like the world is in a nosedive towards total destruction, but that is just another reason to do the things in life you enjoy. This will only give you strength. Strength needed to let your voice be heard. Don't go quiet into the night. Don't give up on decency and love.

I read this shortly after seeing BvS. Upon leaving the theater, I was upset, and All-Star Superman was just what I needed. This is Superman at his best: selfless and kind. A hero who fills you with hope. This comic still makes me feel some kind of way, and I always find myself thinking about it.
