The Thorn and the Blossom
The Thorn and the Blossom: A Two-Sided Love Story | Theodora Goss
8 posts | 17 read | 33 to read
"The Thorn and the Blossom" is a remarkable literary artifact: Readers can open the book in either direction to decide whether they'll first read Brendan's, or Evelyn's account of their mysterious love affair.

I‘ve read this for one of TheStoryGraph challenges.

A standalone novella. Romance and fairies, supposedly…? Not finished because, apparently, open endings are edgy. The second half is an unnecessary rehashing of the story from the male POV (and yes, we do find out exactly zero new things from it). Plus, why can‘t people just talk? Seriously. It takes just ONE CONVERSATION.

(But then—no book…?)

2/5

Pickpick

I saw that this book has a very low rating on here and am surprised. I enjoyed it. The accordion binding works for this story because it is supposed to be open-ended as to whose story to read first. I read Brendan's first, and felt that the ending had to be left open on purpose so that the stories come together without the reader knowing exactly what will happen from the other perspective. Fun but very short read.

I needed a break from my CIA spy novel, so I picked up this whimsical story. It's short, I read it in about an hour. This story suffers from too much telling and not enough showing. In a longer novel this would have bothered me a lot. But this was short enough that it was alright. No concrete ending. A lot I'd left to your imagination.

I love books with interesting, artsy formats. This is a "two-sided love story" with his version told on one side and hers told on the other side. And it comes with a slipcase. And it's illustrated.

Novelgossip So pretty! Interesting concept as well. 8y
AmyStewart @jpmcwisemorgan you basically read it from start to finish on one side, then turn it around and read it from start to finish on the other side. 8y
jpmcwisemorgan @AmyStewart Which side are you starting with? 8y
BethFishReads How cool is that? 8y
tjwill I love crazy formats! This looks like fun! 8y
LA_Mead That looks gorgeous! The concept of "his" and "hers" sides of a narrative reminds me of "Fates & Furies" a little bit. 8y
VolunteerVal I just ordered a copy of this book on half.com for 90 cents. Thanks for making me aware of it. 8y
