This Tuesday I went on an excursion to the setting of The Judge and his hangman with my 9th graders. It was a guided hike through the Twannbach gorge designed like an escape room/quiz. They had to listen to the clues given by actors at the original scenes to find out who was the murderer. Their reactions were mixed because it sometimes was a tough hike. I loved it. 🕵ï¸â€â™€ï¸ğŸ™ˆğŸ•µï¸â€â™€ï¸

Dilara The place looks stunning and hands-on teaching is the best! I bet they won't forget this book, in spite of (or thanks to) the tough hike 😉 4mo
lil1inblue Oh, how cool! What a great learning adventure. 4mo
bthegood What a great learning experience for your students and @Dilara I agree - the students won't forget this book- very cool 🙂 (edited) 4mo

MariaW @Dilara @bthegood That‘s what I keep telling myself - they will appreciate it later. 💪 4mo
Dilara @MariaW ğŸ˜And now, I really want to read the tagged book! (And also go on this literary hike, but I am assuming you'd have to speak German for it to be worth it, so it's not really for me 😔) 4mo
MariaW @Dilara I am not sure if the translation is any good. The original was written in the 50ies and the language and world view are a bit dusty - like the Agatha Christie murder mysteries. But since the author is Swiss, we are teaching his novels and plays to the students. The plays are even better, but the novels are quite good as well. 4mo

Listening to the second Dürrenmatt murder mystery, the first one with Kommisär Bärlach. I already read it last year and decided to read it with my class, so this is a nice way to recise it. ?

Pickpick

Actually I Never read Dürrenmatt in school, but I want read him with my own class. So, I had to start at some point of his work, why not the detective novel? I really liked it even though the culprit was clear relatively early, but I wanted to know how he gets rounded up in the end. The way Dürrenmatt makes jokes about the different Swiss regions is well done as well.

Village Police Officer finds a corpse in a car and decides to drive the crime scene with the corpse to the comissioner‘s office in the next big town. 🙈 Police operations 100 years ago.

BarbaraBB This was the first book I read in German. I was 14. I loved it! 2y
MariaW @BarbaraBB I am reading it for the First time now - with 37 - and I love it too. 😊 2y
Purpleness I read this for my university German class! Brings back good memories 2y
Aimeesue Well, that‘s one way of securing the scene. 😂 2y
MariaW @Purpleness Never realized it was read in German classes abroad as well. Dürrenmatt is part of the curriculum in Germany and of course Switzerland. 2y

Mehso-so

Although I have a feeling the deeper meanings were lost on me, I am happy to have read it. Surprised by its actually surprising twists and turns and his ability to create incredible suspense without needing much action. The initially seemingly lazy and disillusioned detective turns in to a very special kind of hero.

charl08 @BarbaraBB I would definitely have enjoyed this more than 5y
BarbaraBB That‘s one I have yet to read for the list of #1001books... is it horrible?! 😀 5y
charl08 @BarbaraBB It probably just was the teacher. It's very much of its time: working class England, grim. But it has a lot of fans. 5y

If we don't end up in his next novel... it'll be a miracle.

Pickpick

Like almost all kids in the German speaking psrts of Switzerland I read this one in school. And I did not dislike it! I remembered parts of it over 20 years, which I think is impressive. Now after reading it again I'm still impressed. Dürrenmatt is playing with the reader and his/her expectations like Bärlach is playing with the people in the book.

LiljaPleasant I really need to read more Dürrenmatt 😱 5y
Jari-chan @LiljaPleasant Me too 😉 5y
