My Struggle: Book 4
My Struggle: Book 4 | Karl Ove Knausgaard
11 posts | 25 read | 4 to read
"My Struggle: Book 4 "finds an eighteen-year-old Karl Ove Knausgaard in a tiny fishing village in northern Norway, where he has been hired as a schoolteacher and is living on his own for the first time. When the ferocious winter takes hold, Karl Ove--in the company of the Hafjord locals, a warm and earthy group who have spent their lives working, drinking, and joking together in close quarters--confronts private demons, reels from humiliations, and is elated by small victories. We are immersed, along with Karl Ove, in this world--sometimes claustrophobic, sometimes serenely beautiful--where memories and physical obsessions burn throughout the endless Arctic winter. In "Book 4," Karl Ove must weigh the realities of his new life as a writer against everything he had believed it would be."

More of those crazy Knausgaard shenanigans—drunken, out of control nights; bizarre situational scenes that are like “why did he even think to put this in here?”; and the ceaselessly awkward obsession with getting laid.

It helps that all this this is so differently written that it‘s like the author is of another species. Like it‘s the reflections of an alien come to this planet to live amongst us.

#BiblioMAYnia Day 6: #SideProfile reminded me of these Knausgaard My Struggle series that I have not even begun reading yet. I think I am only missing the massive Book 6. Anyone who has read these books yet?

While I don‘t resonate with everything he says, Karl Ove captures nicely the awkwardness of being an adolescent boy, maybe one who thinks all his friends have had sex while he hasn‘t but is desperate to, one who is always second-guessing what the girls are thinking, etc. Brilliant writing.

This one I liked the least of the series. It is the one about when he starts teaching in the north of Norway, fails to write and falls in love with a 13 years old. Still a great read however.

True to form, KO was so blunt about his fears and shortcomings (no pun intended but I guess that's a spoiler), that I had to read on just to see how things turned out with each new romantic pursuit. The dramatic irony produced (he builds a strong case each time for impending failures) created a schadenfreude that was difficult to resist.

TMI about Karl Ove and his premature ejaculation problem. Also TMI as to his yen (as an 18-year-old teacher) for 13-year-old girls. Yet I suppose that's what makes this book so compelling. The honesty and cringeworthiness of it.

Ok I am only 153 pages in but I am always struck how I love the intricate musings of Karl Ove's soul! Moving at a wonderful pace the real life workings of confidence and self doubt, longing for a future yet looking at the past .Often capturing a moment like a still life to linger in contrasted with a fleeting instant who's full weight won't be understood till much later

This is where Knausgaard's genius lies. If you trust him, if you are willing to tread through the mundane and the sublime, you will be rewarded in ways you will never suspect. You will experience what it feels like to be in someone else's head, literally. This man is genius.
