The dark, moody, and mystical fantasy begun in Thorn Jack, the first novel in the Night and Nothing series, continues in this bewitching follow upan intriguing blend of Twilight, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Alice in Wonderland, and A Midsummer Nights Dreamin which Finn Sullivan discovers that her town, Fair Hollow, borders a dangerous otherworld . . . Serafina Sullivan and her father left San Francisco to escape the painful memory of her older sister Lily Roses suicide. But soon after she arrived in bohemian Fair Hollow, New York, Finn discovered a terrifying secret connected to Lily Rose. The placid surface of this picture-perfect town concealed an eerie supernatural worldand at its center, the wealthy, beautiful, and terrifying Fata family. Though the striking and mysterious Jack Fata tried to push Finn away to protect her, their attraction was too powerful to resist. To save him, Finna girl named for the angels and a brave Irish princebanished a cabal of malevolent enemies to shadows, freeing him from their diabolical grip. Now, the rhythm of life in Fair Hollow is beginning to feel a little closer to ordinary. But Finn knows better than to be lulled by this comfortable sense of normalcy. Its just the calm before the storm. For soon, a chance encounter outside the magical Brambleberry Books will lead her down a rabbit hole, into a fairy world of secrets and legacies . . . straight towards the shocking truth about her sisters death. Lush and gorgeously written, featuring star-crossed lovers and the collision of the magical and the mundane, Briar Queen will appeal to the fans of Cassandra Clares bestselling Mortal Instruments series and Melissa Marrs Wicked Lovely.

Pickpick

If you love folklore, poetry, & pretty, pretty girls & boys, these books are like candy. If not, something with less tangly world building might satisfy more. The Briar Queen is like a modern Goblin Market meets Orpheus. Christy & Sylvie get more to do than in Thorn Jack, & I welcomed the introduction of Moth, richer in character than most of the series' enigmatic young men (and there's a ton). But I wish Finn & Jack's love had more time to bloom.

Dear Melanie,
Stop taking every ARC that remotely piques your interest. I know it‘s rare to find something that even mildly aligns with your tastes in our ARC selection, but you never read them because your level of interest is skewed by how horrible the selection is.
Love, Melanie

Ubergeekygirl Gimme those ARCs! I'd love to be having your problem. 9y
thelibraryofmars @Ubergeekygirl I'm using one (The Children's Home) for a traveling book project soon! And I have started most of these, but they never are as interesting as my (overloaded) TBR shelf so I just never get to them. 9y
wordcrown I want to read Jane Steele so bad! Ever since I re-read Jane Eyre I've been craving everything that is even remotely associated with it 9y

thelibraryofmars @wordcrown I need to reread Jane Eyre before I pick up Jane Steele again! (but maybe we've talked about this on Tumblr before?) The beginning didn't quite hook me, but I've heard good reviews by other folks so I'll give it another go eventually. 9y
bookishchelle I really enjoyed Thorn Jack, but for some reason I can't get into Briar Queen. 9y
thelibraryofmars @bookishchelle I even brought Briar Queen with me on a trip and never got to it. I knew it was part of a series, but I thought it was the first one? Ha, silly me. 9y
AlexandraGriffin I did the exact same thing. Hahaha. If it was even slightly intriguing I'd grab it. 9y
AlexandraGriffin Ps I'd love to snag Jane Steele if you don't like it 😉 9y
thelibraryofmars @GriffinAndHerBooks and I swear to god, you receivers (sorry, former receiver) steal all of the sci fi books before the rest of us get a chance. Give. Me. Sci fi. I'll let you know about Jane Steele, buuuuuuut it's probably going to be awhile. 9y
bookishchelle @asketchyeducation Oops first comment had a huge error! Lol I can relate to accidentally buying the wrong book in a unfamiliar series. This is why I check Goodreads when interested in a new series when book browsing. 9y
AlexandraGriffin Hahaha that would be char, I mostly ended up with thrillers and the occasional teen book! 9y
Novelnerd88 I enjoyed Briar Queen. A creepy, crazy take on Wonderland. 8y
