"The Eaton" is the debut novel of John K. Addis. Spanning over 100 years of mid-Michigan history, but written in the gruesome style of '80s horror classics, "The Eaton" tells the story of Sam Spicer, who purchases the dilapidated Michigan Central Railroad Depot in Eaton Rapids with the dream of opening a hot new martini bar. But when he and his friends discover an abandoned underground hotel directly beneath the property, they must discover what happened to the original guests-before their own time runs out. Early Reviews: "***** (5 Stars) - Reading John K. Addis was like reading an eighties horror movie. It's fast paced, macabre and full of gritty atmospheric settings, along with a relentlessly chilling plot from an author who's mastered the genre!" - "Catherine Rose Putsche, Top #40 Regional Goodreads Reviewer, Author of "The Surgeon's Son"" "***** (5 Stars) - The Eaton is the best kind of horror. Some of the images are so vivid that I had to put The Eaton down for a few minutes, let myself relax, take a few breaths, and then I could continue. This book is so well plotted, and the characters feel so real, that you will be as terrorized as they are. You will have to keep reading to see what happens next, even if you are afraid to find out." - "Bill Mackela, Bill's Book Reviews" "***** (5 Stars) - Amazing debut by a really talented author. As the action unfolds, and we start jumping back and forth in time, the narrative becomes irresistible. This is one of those books that will stick with you after you read it-Addis does a great job of putting you in the action." - "Alec Drachman, Goodreads" "***** (5 Stars) - I would recommend The Eaton to anyone who loves a good horror story with rich, well-developed characters who all have their secrets they would like to keep hidden, but are faced with a horror they've never met. If you ever hoped to find tunnels under the floorboards of an old house, or imagined you were on some sort of expedition to discover secrets that have been buried for years, you might want to try The Eaton." - "Melanie Marsh, FangFreakinTasticReviews.com"

Finished this audiobook today... the narrator was not my favorite (I especially didn't like his reading for female characters) and there are a couple of parts in this book that went a bit too far into unsettling territory for my comfort. However, the story is unique and downright scary. 3 1/2 stars. 💀

Coleen I love this cover pic! 8y
GlitteryOtters Seriously, it's the most Stephen King-like book I've read written this century. I wish this sort of suspenseful horror book was still being written more often these days...this is the genre of horror I like best. I wish he had done a little better job on it (&I wish they'd chosen a different audiobook narrator!), but I'm still glad I read it. Definitely puts me in the Halloween mood (now I'm going to read the not-scary Christie Hallowe'en Party!) 8y
sprainedbrain @GlitteryOtters It reminded me of King too, and that's a good thing! I could have done without the extended kitten flashback though. 8y
GlitteryOtters @sprainedbrain same. If I had known about it, I might not have bought the book (which is why I trigger warning tagged it...I have a really hard time with animal cruelty) 8y
sprainedbrain @GlitteryOtters Not the only trigger, but the other horrible scene was at least shorter. Some of those flashbacks just went on and on! I am glad I read it though. 8y

3.5 out of 5 stars. The author came up with a great concept & basic story (set 1 hour from my home!). He has a true gift for writing suspense, but his characters are 2 dimensional (& he needs to learn how to create/animate strong female characters). Book needs some editing to tighten story (drags too long at end). Audiobook narrator was OK, not great & pronounced some words with wrong accent.💥Trigger warnings for mild gore, rape & animal cruelty.

GlitteryOtters (I know it is nitpicky to be annoyed at a blatantly wrong regional accent in a story where setting is important but, really, if you pronounce "aunt" like you are from New England yet are narrating a born & raised Michigander, it *will* annoy me. You don't have to force a blatant Michigan accent, but at least make sure you use more regional-neutral pronounciations. Also, narrator seriously needs to work on his female character voices. 8y
sprainedbrain I have about 3 hours left... I am not overly fond of this narrator but the story is creeping me the &*~$ out and I had to turn it off for the night. 😂 8y
GlitteryOtters @sprainedbrain yeah, this author definitely knows how to tell a suspenseful creepy tale...I definitely could not have finished it late at night (my imagination likes to run riot!), so I think you made a wise choice turning it off now! 😂 8y

I'm about 3 hours in to this audiobook, and it's really creeping me out. At first I was. Others by the narrator's voice for female characters, but now I'm so immersed and freaked out it's barely registering. 😱

This one kept me up all night, too afraid to sleep and too anxious to put down. A must for Stephen King fans.

wanderlustywriter I like Stephen King but am not a huge fan of gore. Is it gory or just scary? 9y
ShelfSpaceLimited @wanderlustywriter this is more scary suspense, not full of gore ☺️ 9y
