Tibetan Peach Pie
Tibetan Peach Pie: A True Account of an Imaginative Life | Tom Robbins
33 posts | 8 read | 4 reading | 12 to read
Internationally bestselling novelist and American icon Tom Robbins delivers the long awaited tale of his wild life and times, both at home and around the globe. Tom Robbins warm, wise, and wonderfully weird novelsincluding Still Life With Woodpecker, Jitterbug Perfume, and Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climatesprovide an entryway into the frontier of his singular imagination. Madcap but sincere, pulsating with strong social and philosophical undercurrents, his irreverent classics have introduced countless readers to natural born hitchhiking cowgirls, born-again monkeys, a philosophizing can of beans, exiled royalty, and problematic redheads. In Tibetan Peach Pie, Robbins turns that unparalleled literary sensibility inward, stitching together stories of his unconventional life, from his Appalachian childhood to his globetrotting adventures told in his unique voice that combines the sweet and sly, the spiritual and earthy. The grandchild of Baptist preachers, Robbins would become over the course of half a century a poet-interruptus, an air force weatherman, a radio dj, an art-critic-turned-psychedelic-journeyman, a world-famous novelist, and a counter-culture hero, leading a life as unlikely, magical, and bizarre as those of his quixotic characters. Robbins offers intimate snapshots of Appalachia during the Great Depression, the West Coast during the Sixties psychedelic revolution, international roving before homeland security monitored our travels, and New York publishing when it still relied on trees. Written with the big-hearted comedy and mesmerizing linguistic invention for which he is known, Tibetan Peach Pie is an invitation into the private world of a literary legend.

“All things considered, I‘ve learned more from talking to painters than talking to writers....since [painters] labor not in vineyards of verbiage but upon ice floes of visual images, they tend to function with fewer inhibitions than the wordsmiths when it comes to vocally exploring and expressing ideas. Since no one judges their speech, comparing it to their written work, they don‘t feel so acutely the weight of language.” #painting #QuotsyJul21

“It's a privilege to love someone, to truly love them; and while it's paradisaical if she or he loves you back, it's unfair to #demand or expect reciprocity. As long as words and ideas exist, there will be a few misfits who will cavort with them in a spirit of *approfondement*–if I may borrow that marvelous French word that translates roughly as ‘playing easily in the deep‘–and in so doing they will occasionally bring to realization Kafka‘s belief that ‘a novel should be an ax for the frozen seas around us‘.” #Frozen #QuotsyNov18 Note: I'm not sure if this quote is from the tagged book.

“Be careful what goes into your mouth and what comes out of it.”

This sort-of memoir was somehow my first Tom Robbins. While none of the stories particularly blew me away, I loved his writing style and humor. He seems like my kind of people. Excited to read one of his novels soon!

MinDea A long time ago I was told to read Jitterbug Perfume. I tried it back then but couldn't get into it since them I have heard such good things about it and consider trying it again! 6y
Leftcoastzen His quirkiness can be an acquired taste , but I have always enjoyed his books. 6y
Redwritinghood I would recommend starting with the classic 6y

britt_brooke @MinDea I bought Jitterbug Perfume off @Shemac77 ‘s recommendation a few months ago. Hope to read it before year‘s end. 6y
britt_brooke @Redwritinghood @Leftcoastzen That‘s my plan! I bought it last week while in Colorado. 👍🏻 6y
Suet624 For some reason I have so many more memories from Jitterbug but you can‘t go wrong with either of the two. 6y
Shemac77 LOVE him! 6y
Shemac77 You will love it! I think we had the conversation about me loving it (the timing etc?) 6y

"Not one word of my oeuvre, not one, has been written while in an artificially altered state. Unlike many authors, I don‘t even drink coffee when I write. No coffee, no cola, no cigarettes. There was a time when I smoked big Havana cigars while writing, not for the nicotine (I didn‘t inhale) but as an anchor, something to hold on to, I told myself, to keep from falling over the edge of the earth. Eventually, I began to wonder (cont. in comments)

TBR-wise, as far as I‘ve gotten is what I‘m currently reading.

PS. I‘ve decided to read the new #Backman after all @Jess7 but at 1/3 or so in, the jury‘s still out.

britt_brooke @Christine Yes!! It‘s an ARC, pub date in October. 💚 6y
Christine Yippee!!! I‘ve loved everything NO has ever written, including his woodworking book despite my total disinterest in the topic! And MM is a comedy genius. Can‘t wait! 6y

Definitely a pick. The autobiography of Tom Robbins is definitely a must read. He‘s had a very interesting life and discusses it in detail. His journey throughout his 80+ years is fascinating.

* #TibetanPeachPie by Tom Robbins.
* My Mom, who wrote a ‘permission note‘ for me in the 5th grade stating that I could take out any book in the library, even from the adult section. It was an absolute scandal that I wanted to read VC Andrews.
* Night. * Larry Darrel, The Razor‘s Edge by W. Somerset Maugham; Some are Sicker Than Others by Andrew Seaward; Catcher in the Rye. #manicmonday @JoScho @AllenTStClair

My latest #audiobook. I read most of Robbins‘ books a while ago and thoroughly enjoyed them, but this left me with a whole new appreciation for them and the author. Wow, he‘s certainly had some adventure! I‘m feeling like I‘m going to have to do some re-reading of those old friends. ❤️

For those who were curious about my recipes: http://www.bethfishreads.com/2016/09/weekend-cooking-2-recipes-for.html -- BTW: enjoyed this Robbins book.

Lindy Thank you! The amount of basil looks to be just enough for a hint of flavour, is that right? Or does it come through more strongly? 8y
BethFishReads @Lindy just a hint. But you could add more of course 8y
