League of Dragons
League of Dragons: A Novel of Temeraire | Naomi Novik
With the acclaimed Temeraire novels, New York Times bestselling author Naomi Novik has created a fantasy series like no other, combining the high-flying appeal of Anne McCaffreys Pern saga and the swashbuckling derring-do of Patrick OBrians historical seafaring adventures. Now, with League of Dragons, Novik brings the imaginative tour de force that has captivated millions to an unforgettable finish. Napoleons invasion of Russia has been roundly thwarted. But even as Capt. William Laurence and the dragon Temeraire pursue the retreating enemy through an unforgiving winter, Napoleon is raising a new force, and hell soon have enough men and dragons to resume the offensive. While the emperor regroups, the allies have an opportunity to strike first and defeat him once and for allif internal struggles and petty squabbles dont tear them apart. Aware of his weakened position, Napoleon has promised the dragons of every countryand the ferals, loyal only to themselvesvast new rights and powers if they fight under his banner. It is an offer eagerly embraced from Asia to Africaand even by England, whose dragons have long rankled at their disrespectful treatment. But Laurence and his faithful dragon soon discover that the wily Napoleon has one more gambit at the readyone that that may win him the war, and the world.Praise for Naomi Novik and her Novels of Temeraire Noviks influences run the gamut from Jane Austen to Patrick OBrian, with a side trip through Anne McCaffrey. The final book in the Temeraire series brings a worthy end to the saga. If reading about Napoleonic wars and hijinks around the world in an alternate regency era with dragons sounds interesting these are well worth checking out.

Laurence and Temeraire continue with the Russians after giving Napoleon a huge defeat, but the brilliant strategist makes it back to France. Then Temeraire and Iskierka discover that their egg has been stolen by the French. This ninth and final book in a sprawling series concerning fine continents series comes to a satisfying end as forces come together in a final battle against Napoleon. Enjoyable, though I don't think I'd feel a need to reread.

This was a good end the series. It dragged a bit during the battles, but I liked how the author neatly wrapped up the conflict and wrote a history that was believable. I liked how each of the dragons has a very distinct personality, although I do have some trouble believing that Lawrence could also be so righteous in the face of so much atrocity. 3.5/5 stars, this book redeems the series and is a good read.

I‘ve had this on my shelf for two years, I‘ve put off reading it because the book before this one was AWFUL, but I‘m impressed with this one. Now I‘m dragging this out because I don‘t want to finish the series 😅

I'm sad to see the series end, though narrative-wise I agree it's time. This last book runs through character callbacks like they're going out of style. Novik skims or completely skips much of the fighting in this book, instead focusing on the sections in between. It was slightly jarring at first with the time jumps and "off-screen" battles, but it worked once I adjusted my expectations. The ending works for me. A good close to a fantastic series.

I‘ve had this one in the TBR pile for over a year now, and I think I‘m in a good place for something light and fun.

Started rereading (books 1-4) this series in the fall and I only have 200 pages left! I adore this series. While it certainly has its flaws, I like the original take on history and the characters are memorable. Plus, dragons. 😉

Maybe I was wrong in my last post. Dragons are Fantasy. I can see that. I admit to not completely understanding the line between Paranormal and Fantasy. Here the #Audies2017 finalists in Fantasy.

Guildedearlobe Loved The Hike. So jazzed it was picked. Plus, Dragons don't HAVE to be fantasy. 😈 8y
LitHousewife @Guildedearlobe One day I will get this right, Bob. I promise!!!! 8y

A satisfying end to the series, and I have a feeling I'll like it more if I reread them without the gaps in between.

I love this series, and am sorry it's over, even though I know it went on for a very long time as it is. I love the world building and the characters. Also, I want a dragon! 🐉

There were some problems in terms of storytelling, but they're rather easy to forgive in light of everything else - especially the ending. An amazing conclusion to a series that is near and dear to my heart :).

Spiderfelt That is exactly the sentiment Jhumpa Lahiri was trying to convey In Other Words. Daughter of an immigrant mother who refused to assimilate or even accommodate her new country, she grew feeling like she didn't belong anywhere. 9y
kammartinez @Spiderfelt Very true! Intertextuality works in the strangest and most magical ways, doesn't it :)? 9y
Spiderfelt Yes, yes it does @kammartinez. One would not pair these two authors in most circumstances. 9y

Nine books and ten years in, and I cannot think of a better set of words to describe Temeraire and Laurence's relationship. Art by the inimitable Todd Lockwood: http://toddlockwood.com/book-covers/temeraire/

My heart aches that this will be Temeraire and Laurence's last adventure, but I cannot wait to see what happens next. This is going to be one hell of a last ride.
