Curse of the Pogo Stick
Curse of the Pogo Stick | Colin Cotterill
2 posts | 7 read | 2 to read
In Vientiane, a booby-trapped corpse, intended for Dr. Siri, the national coroner of Laos, has been delivered to the morgue. In his absence, only Nurse Dtui’s intervention saves the lives of the morgue attendants, visiting doctors, and Madame Daeng, Dr. Siri’s fiancée. On his way back from a communist party meeting in the north, Dr. Siri is kidnapped by seven female Hmong villagers under the direction of the village elder so that he will—in the guise of Yeh Ming, the thousand-year-old shaman with whom he shares his body—exorcise the headman’s daughter whose soul is possessed by a demon, and lift the curse of the pogo stick. From the Hardcover edition.

Mehso-so

So-so with the caveat that part of my issue was with the reader, and I probably would have liked this more in print.

This book features Dr. Siri, a coroner in 1970‘s Laos. The mystery wasn‘t very engaging to me, but I loved the details of Communist Laos in 1977. If I can find a print version of another book in this series I‘ll likely give it a try.

CSeydel I really enjoy this series! I definitely recommend starting with book 1 because you get more introduction to the characters and Dr Siri‘s spiritual abilities. 1y
Bookwormjillk @CSeydel thanks! Not sure how I ran across the 5th in the series, but I definitely want to find the first in print. 1y
CSeydel The mysteries are definitely secondary to the character development and the social/political/cultural exploration, but that was particularly pronounced in ‘pogo stick,‘ I felt. I‘ve only read the first 5 so far. 1y
Bookwormjillk @CSeydel That reminds me of Louise Penny's books which are some of my favorites. Thanks! 1y

I loved the very idea of a murder mystery set in Laos. Funny and mysterious in equal measure.
