Don't Breathe a Word: A Novel | Jennifer McMahon

Joshilyn Jackson, author of Gods in Alabama and Backseat Saints Jennifer McMahon never flinches and never fails to surpriseas [she] weaves a young couple into a perverse fairyland where Rosemarys Baby could be at home. Randy Susan Meyers, author of The Murderers Daughters Two young lovers find themselves ensnared in a seemingly supernatural web that ties them to a young girls disappearance fifteen years earlier in this dark and twisty tale from the New York Times bestselling author of Island of Lost Girls and Promise Not to Tell. *please do picture me on my knees with arms stretched toward the heavens, screaming this with deepest despair* why, dear author, why?!! That ending!!

My poor heart had to spend a few days in recovery after that final twist.

For me, McMahon writes childhood / adolescent experiences like nobody else in the thriller / horror genre... except maybe early Stephen King. She just plain gets kids/ tweens/ teens.

flying_monkeys And if you liked Don't Breathe a Word, I highly recommend you check out You Let Me In by Camilla Bruce. Be warned, though, the latter delves to even darker depths than the former. 4y

I definitely enjoyed this book by Jennifer McMahon. She has yet to disappoint me. This was a very eerie story about kids who believe in fairies. But, when one of them goes missing, that belief turns into a fear that haunts them into adulthood until they unravel a twisted and creepy story about what happened many years ago. Great story and writing.

This did not end the way I thought it was going to. It had lots of twists and turns, and was a true horror story on many levels. I really liked it.

So this book was amazing! Lisa disappears in the woods land of the fairies. The ending was amazing! I‘m usually pretty good at guessing but not so with this one!

Stayed up til 3:00 to finish my last book. I‘m still in bed and getting ready to start this one. Well I did get up todo the dishes and walk the dogs. I‘m not a total bum. That‘s my squirrel watch dog in the background.

I didn't think Jennifer McMahon could outdo herself with The Winter People but boy was I wrong! This is another one I finished in one sitting. It drew me in so fast and the suspense left me at the edge of my seat reading as quickly as I could just to know what was going to happen next. I absolutely loved the supernatural aspect woven in and the ending left me completely lost for words. I recommend this again and again.

The suspense really kept me turning the pages on this one, and it was actually creepy enough that at one point I switched reading rooms so I wasn‘t alone. 😂 It was a really imaginative and entertaining read that strained credulity by the end, but was satisfying overall. A pick for storytelling and suspense, so-so for the ending. (Edit: this is probably my favorite Jennifer McMahon so far.)

Today's #AuthorFeature subject: my favorite #horror author, Jennifer McMahon! As you can see, I own all of her books because I love them so much. All of her horror books feature a mystery with paranormal elements, and she switches back and forth between the past and the present to reveal clues. Whether you're into reading about serial killers, fairies, zombies, haunted dolls, or witches, you'll find it here - and you'll sleep with the lights on!

Jess_Franzino Love a good paranormal mystery! I‘ll have to check out some books by this author 😃 7y
leahrosereads I've only read The Winter People and Night Sister so far, but I'm really hoping to get to her backlist soon. Both of those books were incredible! 7y
rightasrain13 @Jess_Franzino I highly recommend it! In my opinion you can't go wrong with her 😄 7y

rightasrain13 @leahrosereads You should definitely check out the rest of her stuff! Out of those two, the Winter People was my favorite I think - so spooky. What about you? 7y
leahrosereads @rightasrain13 Oh yeah, the Winter People was by far my favorite. I preferred the overall atmosphere of it to The Night Sister. I think I'm going to try Burn Town before going to her other works, but Im not sure. What do you think? 7y
Jess_Franzino @rightasrain13 I‘ll add one of her books to my June reads. What‘s the title of the one about the spooky doll? 7y
rightasrain13 @Jess_Franzino That would be Dismantled - the doll is so creepy, I still get chills thinking about it! 7y
rightasrain13 @leahrosereads I definitely agree - I liked the Winter People better! I think it's actually one of my favorites of hers. Burntown was not my favorite, but it's obviously still really good, so you can't go wrong really no matter what order you read them in 😊 7y

This was definitely my least favorite McMahon book so far. The way the characters acted was not believable and the pieces of the puzzle never fit together right for me at the end.

Missing girl mysteries are all over the place these days. This one stands out. Extremely weird and creepy, with great atmosphere. However, as the story began wrapping up it felt painfully convoluted and certain points were pretty unbelievable. Still, it kept me guessing and I wanted to keep reading. The final few pages made it all worthwhile, with a great ending. This is my third book now by this author and I'm really enjoying her style.

Smangela I love Jennifer McMahon as well. I think The One I Left Behind might be my favorite and Dismantled I think was the most creepy! 8y
TheLudicReader I loved Promise Not to Tell, but I thought Dismantled was a hot mess and The Winter People, while it started out well, all fell apart in the end. So disappointing. I have a couple others on my tbr shelf. I'll keep trying. 8y

This was a very unique storyline with a lot of promise. I really enjoyed most of this book until the last chapters. I was disappointed in the explanation...but, it was still enjoyable. A creepy, wild read!

Book 2 of #biblioweekend. What a crazy story! Are fairies real? Is there a dark man that haunts you and wants your first born? Just when everything seems wrapped up, more twists. This was creepy and strange, then more strange and a bit creepier.

Scurvygirl Ooh, I have this on my Kindle. Good to know it's a keeper! 😉 8y
[DELETED] 2232195534 I love Jennifer McMahon's books. You're never sure if it's supernatural or just plain old crazy...😳 8y

This book keeps you guessing long after you've finished it! Do you believe in fairies? Told from alternating perspectives 15 years apart, you'll follow Lisa (the stolen child) and phoebe (the stolen child's brothers girlfriend) as you explore what really happened that summer, and how it affects now!
