Most likely, I won‘t finish this before the end of January but I wanted to at least start this third book from the #NewYearWhoDis list from @michellelav because it‘s about something I don‘t know much about as an American. I‘m looking forward to learning more.

michellelav I hope you enjoy the learning experience. It can be a lot so I always had tissues close by! 5y

This book is the wakeup call every Canadian needs. Indigenous rights are human rights. If you haven't read this book I suggest you do and keep a box of tissues near by.

The state of emergency was declared on Oct. 28, 2011, by Attawapiskat‘s new chief, Theresa Spence. I had known her through her work on council. She didn‘t strike me as a firebrand... She was worried that, as the arctic winter descended on the community, people in these makeshift quarters could die.

Chief Spence asked me to speak with Minister John Duncan about a plan to deal with the immediate crisis of families living in tents and sheds.
