Sorry for the terrible quality photo - I just saved one off google real quick. But I just finished listening to this one on audio. It was heartbreaking - as anything 9/11 is. I was fortunate to not personally know anyone who died that day but I make a point every year of reading/watching stuff about the day as I don‘t ever want to forget the people and what we went through as a country that day.

Ok, @ljuliel , I‘ve made it past chapter 8. (Holy cow, what a read this is ... ) What am I looking for? Besides the many missed opportunities, communication failures and lack of intelligence that in hindsight seem so obvious and maddening and gut-wrenching?

ljuliel Well, you just hit the nail on the head. THAT was what I was talking about. I don‘t remember the other book glaringly pointing out all the missed opportunities. These guys were on watch lists. Slid right by the airline checkpoints several times even when the alarms went off , etc. This book seems much more willing to shine a light on all those items , not including the mess with the air traffic guys, who made decisions about calling in our 👇🏼 5y

ljuliel Military planes , they couldn‘t even figure out which plane hit the building for the longest time , and lost the one headed for DC . I don‘t remember the other book naming all these things. 5y

Amiable @ljuliel I don't think the other book included these details, no. But it makes sense-- that one is a compilation of oral narratives of people's personal experiences on 9/11. This one is a journalist reporting on facts. In the first book it might be odd for, say “Bob Jones,“ to say, “I was working for the FAA and never thought to alert NORAD about the hijackings.“ In this book it's just a report of about what “Bob Jones“ did -- or didn't do. Amiable @ljuliel I think reading both of these books in tandem is the best way to approach it, though -- between the two we are getting the fullest, richest picture of what actually happened that day. Reading them has been like a punch to the gut and a reliving of the day all over again, but I am grateful to gain the knowledge. (edited) 5y

ljuliel Right. I agree, I think both together tell the story in different ways, but they compliment each other rather than being exact copies of the same story. It is good to learn as much as possible. 5y

ljuliel It sure leaves you feeling as though you knew those victims and families personally , didn‘t it ? It was written perfectly . I thought both books were so well done , each in different ways. This one was harder for me to read though. 5y

Amiable @ljuliel So good. I think the other book actually was more emotionally difficult for me, maybe. Because this one was a narrative nonfiction, I could read it like a story and mentally take a step back. With the other book it was personal oral accounts from a lot of people all over the world, which made me feel like we were all reliving the day again. I kept remembering my own experiences on that day. It made me feel anxious again. 5y

I'm a New Yorker, so I don't even want to try to read this. However, I have managed to read two related books that I want to recommend here. One is about the intelligence failures that lead up to 9/11 (why that's somehow easier for me to deal with I don't understand) called The Watchdogs Didn‘t Bark. The other book is "Grand Illusion" by Wayne Barrett, which is about Giuliani's negligence to protect the WTC between the '93 bombing and 9/11.

Started this one yesterday. 39 pages and it's a hard one to read. I maybe should not have started this right around the anniversary of 9/11.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Narrative nonfiction master Mitchell Zuckoff thoughtfully humanizes 9/11. A meticulous timeline dotted with personal stories creates a vivid picture of the fear and confusion, bravery and selflessness. This completely consumed me. Reading about such pain and loss is difficult and draining, but there are so many folks who lived this, and who are still living this. We owe it them to better understand what happened.

BookFreakOut Have you heard of this upcoming one? My mom's reading an arc of it and said it was powerful, haven't heard her final thoughts.
