Two young girls are missing. A police officer is found dead. Detective Inspector Embla Nystrm must quickly solve the mystery and find the children before the small town takes matters into their own hands. When a little girl disappears a few weeks before Christmas, suspicions fall to the last person she was seen with: the mentally handicapped teenage boy who gave her a ride home after school. Complicating the matter is the fact that detectives can hardly get a word out of him. Meanwhile, 28-year-old Detective Inspector Embla is newly back at work and still trying to recover from her brush with a killer last fall, which left her unable to get back in the ring to defend her title as Nordic light welterweight champion. When a second child disappears and a police officer is found dead, tensions in the small town of Strmstad, Sweden, are at an all-time high--as are Embla's nightmares. As she hunts for the missing children, Embla can't help but think of the case that has been haunting her for years: the disappearance of her childhood best friend. Could the cases be linked? With each passing dark winter day, the odds of finding the children alive shrink, while desperation mounts. Their fathers want answers and will stop at nothing--including murder--to get them.

I am loving this series and catching murders along with Embla Nystrom in Sweden.

I have one more book in this series and then there's no more. In fact, it doesn't appear Helene Tursten has published anything since 2021.

If you enjoy not-so-violent but not-quite-cozy series and/or Nordic mystery-give this series a shot!

Got out this morning/afternoon and did some errands and gassed the car up. Supposed to turn really cold although we may miss the winter precipitation.
Delving into my book set in Sweden at this time of the year. Happy reading this weekend!

EadieB Could the incident be linked to Embla's childhood best friend who disappeared years ago? This novel is very suspenseful with secrets being kept. It is a strong plot with intriguing characters. I am looking forward to book 3 of the series. If you like police procedurals, then you will love to read this book. 2y

In the dark winter days a young girl goes missing in rural Sweden. Her unsolved disappearance followed by a second missing child precipitates other tragic incidents – the brutal beating of a suspect, arson, the murder of a cop. The series is centered around one detective, but here the team of police involved in the many investigations are all featured. It was a decent enough mystery with a balance between plodding procedures and personal lives.

Liz_M I appreciated that although the plot revolves around two missing children I appreciated that it is not exploitative - no pedophiles or serial killers, just tragic events. (edited) 4y

I was so glad to see another Helene Tursten novel. I‘m liking these new characters. There was even a cameo appearance by Irene Huss! Missing children, revenge murder, unexpected twists and turns all make for a really good story. I hope this series continues.
