Stung with Love: Poems and Fragments
Stung with Love: Poems and Fragments | Sappho
5 posts | 8 read | 2 to read
More or less 150 years after Homer's "Iliad," Sappho lived on the island of Lesbos, west off the coast of what is present Turkey. Little remains today of her writings, which are said to have filled nine papyrus rolls in the great library at Alexandria some 500 years after her death. The surviving texts consist of a lamentably small and fragmented body of lyric poetry among them poems of invocation, desire, spite, celebration, resignation and remembrance that nevertheless enables us to hear the living voice of the poet Plato called the tenth Muse. This is a new translation of her surviving poetry. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust theseries to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-datetranslations by award-winning translators."

Wesley's conflict poems are too heavy for my present mood, so I'm laying her side temporarily while I read Sappho.

Bit of a mixed bag this #bookhaul: books of poetry from Ancient Greece, Africa, India and USA; a book from France about a bibliophile's library and his relationship with its contents, and; a 'practical archeology' account of a man and his son seeking to understand the development of human consciousness by living as closely as possible to a Palaeolithic, then Neolithic, then Enlightenment lifestyle.

Bookwomble Lucky I got these today, as I'll be housebound for a while with the 'rona, which I tested positive for when I got home! 😷🦠🤒 2y

Bookwomble @bibliothecarivs @TrishB Thank you for your kind thoughts 😊 I'm not too bad, somewhere between a heavy cold and mild flu. I don't recommend it, but it could feel worse. Read and snooze seems to be the best approach 😃📚😴📚 2y

Good evening 🌻☕️ Today has been tiring but afternoon baking with my little one made it all brighter. I'm hoping to finish Clade this evening and get my review posted so I shall then delve into either Wychwood or one of these lovelies. I'm keen on the idea of reading a sci-fi or fantasy then something Greek then another sci-fi or fantasy and so fourth. What're you reading? 🌻 #Sappho #plato #classicist #booklover #bookblogger #bibliophile
