This is Chris Whitaker ‘s (We Begin at the End) debut novel. Billed as a crime novel, this is really more about several people whose lives intersect when three-year-old Harry is abducted from his bedroom in the middle of the night. I liked Tall Oakes; I LOVED We Begin at the End. Still, this book was often quite funny, and the characters are all interesting. Easy to turn the pages. Thanks again for the gift, @BarbaraBB ❤️

BarbaraBB It probably couldn‘t be as good as We Begin at the End but I am glad you had a good time with it! 🤍 3y

This should be a film. Lots going on in the town of Tall Oaks. At the heart the story of a missing child. I enjoyed this and the reveal came at a point that I wasn't expecting it to in a very understated way.

Not going to lie the first chapter freaked me out a bit. Thought I'd picked a horror by mistake!

Jim closed the blinds, unplugged the telephone, and put the tape in.

Next up . . . Watched him online speaking with Jane Harper. If he's only a tiny bit in the same arena as her I think I'll like him.

Just finished this book ... wasn‘t sure I‘d like it and the start seemed a little over loaded with a lot of characters but as I got further in with it the style of writing and the more details that came through about the characters .... I really enjoyed it ... it‘s a debut novel and I‘d definitely read more of his booked based on this one 😊

This is the second book by Chris Whitaker I have read recently and I have loved both. His writing is so atmospheric and the characters are believable and engaging. There is always humour in his books despite the dark subject matter and I always end up caring about the character‘s lives. Great book 📖

I don‘t often feel compelled to reread a book but I really want to here. This really needs to be a movie, these characters deserve to be brought to life. The ending and beginning of this book was utterly perfect, it had one of the best opening chapters I‘ve ever read. And the twists were unexpected and totally unpredictable. I can‘t recommend this one enough and I can‘t wait to read what Whitaker comes up with next.

Loved this. SO MANY SECRETS. Jaw-dropping reveal that makes perfect sense. Great endings all round. And I love Manny. Crime + humour + secrets + small village life.
