When We Were Arabs
When We Were Arabs: A Jewish Familys Forgotten History | Massoud Hayoun
4 posts | 1 read | 6 to read
The stunning debut of a brilliant nonfiction writer whose vivid account of his grandparents lives in Egypt, Tunisia, Palestine, and Los Angeles reclaims his familys Jewish Arab identity There was a time when being an Arab didnt mean you were necessarily Muslim. It was a time when Oscar Hayoun, a Jewish Arab, strode along the Nile in a fashionable suit, long before he and his father arrived at the port of Haifa to join the Zionist state only to find themselves hosed down with DDT and then left unemployed on the margins of society. In that time, Arabness was a mark of cosmopolitanism, of intellectualism. Today, in the age of the Likud and ISIS, Oscars son, the Jewish Arab journalist Massoud Hayoun whom Oscar raised in Los Angeles, finds his voice by telling his familys story. To reclaim a worldly, nuanced Arab identity is, for Hayoun, part of the larger project to recall a time before ethnic identity was mangled for political ends. It is also a journey deep into a lost age of sophisticated innocence in the Arab world; an age that is now nearly lost. When We Were Arabs showcases the gorgeous prose of the Eppy Awardwinning writer Massoud Hayoun, bringing the worlds of his grandparents alive, vividly shattering our contemporary understanding of what makes an Arab, what makes a Jew, and how we draw the lines over which we do battle.

This is part memoir and part historical, political, social, racial, and religious commentary. The author is a Jew of Arab descent, and I liked the familial stories. He interspersed them with the other topics, which weren‘t half as strong. I‘m glad for what I learned, but definitely regret that I‘ll never get those hours back. Did a LOT of skimming.

The_Real_Nani That‘s too bad! I would definitely be interested in that topic but will wait until something better written comes along. 5y

I‘m so happy to have a peaceful couch bound Sunday. I did swim this morning, but now my plan is to read and write until at least dinner. #yaysunday

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Bklover Thanks! As for the dust, there‘s just two of us, and Mr. B is kind of a neat freak. 🤪 5y

Just found this one in Read Now on NetGalley ... so much for winnowing down my shelf there. It sounds like an interesting perspective, building on Martin Fletcher‘s book The Promised Land from another angle. I also have a few more for this venture into the early times of the State of Israel.

alisiakae Heading over to Netgalley now! 😃 This sounds interesting. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft Doesn‘t it? And I‘m guessing you have some extra reading time right now. 6y

Cinfhen Thanks for sharing, Barbara! Will definitely check this book out!!! Reminds me of two other books one I read and one I still need to read. Spies of No Country and 6y
alisiakae @BarbaraTheBibliophage So much extra reading time! I‘m actually amazed at how little pain I have ( I haven‘t needed the opiate pain meds at all 🎉), and I‘m bouncing back pretty fast, other than the annoying catheter and fatigue. So now the test is not to overdo things for the next 4 weeks! 6y
MoonWitch94 This looks really interesting 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen Thanks! I‘ll add them to my TBR also. 💕 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft I‘m really glad to hear the pain has been manageable. I know you‘ll listen to your body and rest up plenty. But I understand how hard it is. With 2017 brain surgery, I slept 9 hours a night and took a long nap every afternoon for about 10 days. That‘s unheard of for me 6y
