Gittel's Journey
Gittel's Journey: An Ellis Island Story | Lesléa Newman, Amy June Bates
4 posts | 4 read
Gittel and her mother were supposed to immigrate to America together, but when her mother is stopped by the health inspector, Gittel must make the journey alone. Her mother writes her cousin’s address in New York on a piece of paper. However, when Gittel arrives at Ellis Island, she discovers the ink has run and the address is illegible! How will she find her family? Both a heart-wrenching and heartwarming story, Gittel’s Journey offers a fresh perspective on the immigration journey to Ellis Island. The book includes an author’s note explaining how Gittel’s story is based on the journey to America taken by Lesléa Newman’s grandmother and family friend.

This HF book is about a little girl who is supposed to immigrate with her mother to the U.S. Before they board her mother is told she isn‘t allowed to travel due to her being ill. Gittel travels alone and meets up with a family member and is able to reunite with her mother later on. In the story it demonstrates bravery and courage which students would love during IR. The award given to this picture book was the Sydney Taylor Medal.

LizzettM The UDL principle I would use is (2.4)promote understanding across languages since the book incorporates another language. The EL strategy 12, would help them understand language and content since there would be another language they need to comprehend along with English.

DrSpalding You may have not taken social studies yet however this would make an excellent read aloud in a social studies unit in second grade. I currently have a group working on an immigration/Ellis island unit. Excellent choice! Is she a real girl or fictitious? Obviously if she is real, it is a biography. 5y

Brittany_H This book seems like a great resource to use in the classroom to teach about diversity, culture, and history. I really like the resource you added with videos from the author about the inspiration for this book! 5y
DrSpalding A couple of you read this book. As long as she is not a real person, this would be considered historical fiction. However if she is real… This would be what genre? This would be another great book to use in social studies. 5y

A richly illustrated and beautiful immigration story. Worth reading even among so many others.
