From the author of the New York Times bestseller Dear Martin--which Angie Thomas, the bestselling author of The Hate U Give, called "a must read"--comes a pitch-perfect romance that examines class, privilege, and how a stroke of good luck can change an entire life. Meet Rico: high school senior and afternoon-shift cashier at the Gas 'n' Go, who after school and work races home to take care of her younger brother. Every. Single. Day. When Rico sells a jackpot-winning lotto ticket, she thinks maybe her luck will finally change, but only if she--with some assistance from her popular and wildly rich classmate Zan--can find the ticket holder who hasn't claimed the prize. But what happens when have and have-nots collide? Will this investigative duo unite...or divide? Nic Stone, the New York Times bestselling author of Dear Martin and Odd One Out, creates two unforgettable characters in one hard-hitting story about class, money--both too little and too much--and how you make your own luck in the world.

This was a fast and fun read. I really liked Rico, Zan and their friends, as well as most of the supporting cast. The ending wasn‘t my favorite, but all and all, I recommend this book!

I really enjoyed this story. It contains snippets from inanimate objects which happens to be a thing I myself hate a lot, but the rest of the story about a girl who's never had a chance to dream finding a dream so close was so fascinating.

I‘m not usually into contemporary YA, so take this review with a grain of salt. Y‘all...I struggled with this book. Rico was relatable protagonist, & I liked the interludes with random objects. The plot moved quickly, & was way more romantic than expected. Normally I wouldn‘t mind this at all, but Zan, the love interest, felt a little too cartoony to be real. The narration grated on my nerves a bit, but that probably means it was authentic. ★★★☆☆.

Post #BookCon, I‘ve made a list of authors I watched panels of but have never read any of their works with the goal to remedy that stat.

I‘ve been able to maintain several monthly challenges that I‘ve found rewarding — #BookSpin #AuthorAMonth #ShakespeareReadalong — so here‘s to a new (personal) one: #NewToMe - a focus on a diverse array of authors I have up till now never read.

Tagged is first up on my list.

Who‘s with me? 💪🏻🤗😍

TheBookHippie All her books I‘ve read are sooo good! I‘m looking forward to reading this one! I‘ll participate when I find a new one ! 5y
Melismatic @TheBookHippie ❤️ it! 🥰 5y
TheAromaofBooks Sounds like a fun challenge!! I love challenges that help knock off books you've been wanting to read anyway! 5y

Another epic panel about “epic YA” with some real powerhouse authors. Will add some titles in the comments if you‘re interested. #BookCon

Clever, well-written YA that examines class and money—both too little and too much—and how we make our own luck in the world.

Nic Stone is such a unique storyteller. I love how she brought it in the perspectives of inanimate objects through the story. The ending was kind of ambiguous, but I guess that was the point.

This story jumps right into Rico's life - a 17 year old who's had no breaks in her life. She's equally responsible for her 9 year old brother as her mom - both working full-time just to get by with no safety nets. Rico's life is sharply contrasted with Zan, who has never had to worry about money. The two are brought together through a fluke that turns into a quest; they develop a relationship where they learn more about themselves than each other.

Really enjoyed the character-work, especially Rico. Money/finances are such complex subjects to tackle (yay capitalism), even more so in YA, and Nic Stone does a solid job. Confused about how I feel about the ending but I think that's the intention, because it makes the reader have to confront their relationship with money, value, wealth, humanity as it exists in a capitalist structure. Any clean ending would have felt disjointed. 1/250

A zany ya adventure and cute love story. But I guessed the big reveal right off the bat. And there was no real driver for the plot.

Rico, was a likeable character in the beginning I definitely understood her desperation to find the ticket because of her economic standing, I believe as the book went on her constant reminder of just how poor she was, was overdramatic. I loved the different inanimate object point of views. I would have liked to learn more about her partner in crime background throughout the book to understand his point of why he did what he did in the end.

I need to stop doing this - staying up late to finish a book. Of course I won‘t but still. This book was super cute. I absolutely loved the main characters. The book poses a lot of interesting questions in regards to class and wealth. I really enjoyed it. I definitely wasn‘t expecting the ending. 4.5:5 overall. Why didn‘t they have really good YA fiction when I was younger? Also I love the bookstore ladies who gave me an ARC. 🙂

Reggie I know. I never really read YA until I started Litsy and now when I read books with queer characters in them I‘m just so happy that theyre out there for kids who might be feeling alone and then I think. Gosh, I wish we had these books when I was a teen. 5y

Went to hear Nic Stone talk tonight at politics and prose in union market (in dc). She brought a panel of friends with her, all women who write YA. It was a really cool discussion.
