Fix the past. Save the present. Stop the future. Master of science fiction Alastair Reynolds unfolds a time-traveling climate fiction adventure in Permafrost. 2080: at a remote site on the edge of the Arctic Circle, a group of scientists, engineers and physicians gather to gamble humanitys future on one last-ditch experiment. Their goal: to make a tiny alteration to the past, averting a global catastrophe while at the same time leaving recorded history intact. To make the experiment work, they just need one last recruit: an ageing schoolteacher whose late mother was the foremost expert on the mathematics of paradox. 2028: a young woman goes into surgery for routine brain surgery. In the days following her operation, she begins to hear another voice in her head... an unwanted presence which seems to have a will, and a purpose, all of its own one that will disrupt her life entirely. The only choice left to her is a simple one. Does she resist ... or become a collaborator? This one left me feeling unsettled, with the vague sense of impending disaster. Which isn't too unusual for me - it's a normal day for someone with an anxiety disorder - but it definitely coloured how I felt about the book.

The narration/structure is unusual, and I *think* in the end it's well done... but it's a bit of a learning curve.

I continue to avoid getting a #BookSpinBingo, but it's closing in if I read many more books from the list, ha.

2080. Humanity is on the brink of extinction and a last ditch effort from a team based in Russia is to time travel back and alter history just enough to avoid this cataclysm. Retro-causality and quantam theories aside, this was an eerie take in such that the physical you doesn't travel, only your mind does. So the time-traveler becomes a kind of mental parasite inhabiting a host body, & the body chosen and the date you arrive are tricks of fate.

Bookzombie Sounds good! Stacked! 5y

The overall idea and protagonist were good, it just lacked the finesse and depth usually associated with the author. If you're interested in environmental scifi and time travel, and want a fast read, this one fits the bill.

Be prepared for some groan-worthy tech faux pa one expects from television, though.

This is one of the best stories I've read from Alastair Reynolds. It grabbed me right away and I couldn't stop reading. A fascinating time travel concept.

I don‘t read much sci-fi but when the lead time traveller is a 71 year old woman (Yes!!!) I thought I would give it a go. Not really my bag but it had a good storyline and, at less than 200 pages, was the perfect bite size for me.

All the 👏🏼 to the author for writing a non-typical lead character!

Kalalalatja That does sound like something different! 5y
JennyM @Kalalalatja not my go to genre, but so happy to see an older adult portrayed as a kick ass lead character. We need more! 5y
Rissreads I'm intrigued 😊 5y
