The Scent of Secrets
The Scent of Secrets | Jane Thynne

Rich with political intrigue and authentic period details, this historical crime novel--the first of three--is perfect for fans of Roberta Rich, Charles Todd and Robert Harris. In Berlin, 1933, British actress Clara Vine finds herself dangerously involved with the British intelligence service. Clara Vine, a half-Jewish Anglo-German, uses her unique access to the upper echelons of pre-war Nazi society to spy for her native Britain. The novel richly fuses fact and fiction with a cast of real Nazis and their British admirers, such as the Mitford sisters and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Clara Vine, through her friendship with Eva Braun, finds herself enmeshed in a plot to assassinate Hitler. The setting of pre-war Germany is a treasure trove, and the irresistably fresh perspective of Nazi wives puts a new spin on an ever-fascinating era, fraught with glamour, political tension, tragedy and romance.

I loved this third book in the Clara Vine series. Once again I listened to the audiobook, read expertly by Julie Teal. I think this one was the most tense so far, with some brilliant plot twists. Definitely recommend this whole series if you're looking for a different slant on the pre war Nazi Germany era.

#MayBookFlowers #readthisnotthis Two lady spy series, set in World War 2. Two part-German heroines. One is meticulously researched, the other is... not. For best effect, start the Clara Vine series at the beginning, but I love the cover for this one.

Verity First in the series is Black Roses 8y
Verity And obviously this has a different title in the UK to the US edition and it wouldn't let me post it under the UK title. 8y
batsy Oh good, I was recently wondering if I should read the Macneal book when I looked up some cosy mystery suggestions 8y

BarbaraTheBibliophage The Clara Vine books sounds fantastic, and I know how you feel about the Macneals! 8y
Verity @batsy the issues with the Macneals may be more obvious to me as a Brit, but some of them are downright howlers (at one point she calls princess Elizabeth "2nd in line to the throne"), so I'd definitely go with the Thynne's unless you need a book to work off some anger at! 8y
Verity @BarbaraTheBibliophage glad I'm not the only one. I keep reading the Macneals though - I find the rage they engender in me therapeutic! 8y
batsy @Verity Haha! Filed under "future anger reading when the need arises" 8y

This was a great book! I couldn't put it down. It seemed a little bit jumpy at the beginning as it moved from character to character but they tied together beautifully. The ending shocked me. Can't wait to read the next one!

Started this last night. Wasn't sure I would like it but so far not bad. Paris & Berlin in the late 30's as a setting was what grabbed my attention- hoping that is sustained!

While portions of this book were intriguing and well written, I was largely disappointed by the overall plot, character development, and conclusion of the book.
