Dead in the Water: My Forty-Year Search for My Brother's Killer
Dead in the Water: My Forty-Year Search for My Brother's Killer | Penny Farmer
5 posts | 3 read | 9 to read
In this shocking true-crime drama, a forty-year-old double murder brings together a grieving family and two brothers--just kids when they witnessed their father commit the brutal act--to track down a psychopath once suspected as being the Golden State Killer "A real-life page turner more intriguing than anything on Netflix." -Matt Nixson, Books Editor, Mail on Sunday (London) In 1978, two tortured corpses--hooded, bound, and weighted down with engine parts--were found in the sea off Guatemala. Junior doctor Chris Farmer and his girlfriend, Peta Frampton, were still clinging to life when they were thrown from the yacht they'd been crewing. Here is the gripping account of how Chris's family worked alongside police, the FBI, and Interpol to gather evidence against the boat's Californian skipper, Silas Duane Boston. Almost four decades later, in 2015, Chris's sister, Penny, used Facebook to track down Boston. Following the detailed, haunting testimony of his own two sons--who also implicated their father in a string of other killings--Boston was finally arrested and charged with two counts of maritime murder. A story of homicide on the high seas, Dead in the Water is also a tale of a family's fortitude and diligence in tracking down a monster.

This was compelling, heart wrenching, fascinating & downright appalling. I highly recommend this to any true crime fans. It focuses mostly on the impact of the murder of Chris Farmer and Peta Frampton on their families (including the author) and the HUGE role they played moving the case forward, how bafflingly mishandled this was by authorities. The grisly details are discussed, but I wouldn‘t consider it gory.
Narration is 👍 on the audiobook.

author‘s brother & gf were killed while traveling in 1978. This is heart wrenching. Ever think “how did people do things before the Internet?” & the answer here is… they didn‘t. The complexity of the victims being from England, suspect from US, murder in Guatemala.. correspondences out of date, evidence lost. And even once we get past Y2K there is still a huge disconnect… *I* am exasperated, let alone the family.

Penny Farmer‘s brother and his girlfriend were found brutally murdered in the seas off Belize in 1978. For almost 40 years, her family never gave up hope that they would finally piece together what happened. This is a shocking true crime read that reminded me a bit of Bugliosi‘s And the Sea Will Tell because of the remote location and sailing. A solid #truecrime read. #netgalley

Reviewsbylola I‘m using this for #booked2019 #socialmediafocus because the killer was tracked down and the crime finally solved after the author used Facebook to track down and communicate with the key players in the mystery. @cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft 6y

Read this one right before my catamaran trip. Definitely made me paranoid. 😳 This story is true and heartbreaking. The most disturbing part is that his young sons were witness to all the horror. I don‘t see how they grew up to be “normal”. For true crime fans.
