Five Children on the Western Front
Five Children on the Western Front | Kate Saunders
9 posts | 7 read | 11 to read
In this incredible, heart-wrenching story reminiscent of E. Nesbits Five Children and It, Kate Saunders illustrates the power of war but the even greater power of family, and the love that carries us out of the darkness of despair into the light of hope. The sand fairy, also known as the Psammead, is merely a creature from stories Lamb and Edith have heard their older brothers and sisters tell . . . until he suddenly reappears. Lamb and Edith are pleased to have something to take their minds off the war, but this time the Psammeads magic might have a serious purpose. Before their adventure ends, all will be changed, and the Lamb and Edith will have seen the Great War from every possible viewpointthat of factory workers, soldiers and sailors, and nurses. But most of all, the wars impact will be felt by those left behind, at the very heart of their family. Shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal From the Hardcover edition.

BarbaraBB Just that cover breaks my heart! 4y
squirrelbrain I loved Five Children and It - this sounds too sad though. ☹️ 4y
TrishB @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain as it‘s written for children a lot of the sad bits are very subtle! But that subtlety makes it even sadder as an adult. 4y
Cathythoughts Sounds really good 👍🏻❤️ 4y

My 5th lunchtime in 20 weeks. 20 weeks since the first day I worked at home. Not sure what else to say about that, other than I really miss being on campus ☹️

And yet again a middle grade book reduces me to tears. This is so good and rings so true, it‘s just that you don‘t want it to be happening. Thoroughly recommend.

Next off the tbr shelf is Five Children on the Western Front, which has been waiting to be read so long that my copy is a proof. It was published in October 2014. I think I got this from the magic shelf at work a few months after that, but that‘s still nearly 3 years...

A heart wrenching sequel and homage to E.Nesbit‘s #Five Children and It.

Whilst reading this, I didn't really understand the point of it - but upon finishing it and reading the author's note, it is clear that this book, importantly, is about remembering those that were lost during the war and the suffering endured. A great book and a relatively quick read - 4/5⭐️s

Written as a sequel to the classic, the Psammead returns at the start of WW1. The family will not be the same by the end of the book.
