I would use Because by Mo Willems (2019) in my classroom to help students explore their interests and find inspiration from the past. For example, if a student enjoys art, they will research influential artists who shaped their passion. Then, they would share their inspiration by saying, “Because of Van Gogh, I want to create art.“ The goal of the assignment is to inspire students through the work of others and encourage their passions.

#TuesdayTunes @TieDyeDude
A day late, but my favorite hot take for better than the original is the live 10,000 Maniacs cover of Patti Smith's Because the Night. I love Patti Smith, but I think there's something about Natalie Merchant's voice that matches the song so well. The productions of the MTV Unplugged series from the 90s were very well done, and this one is no exception: the whole concert is fantastic.

Billypar And as a bonus - this song was also covered by Shirley Manson of Garbage and Marissa Paternoster of Screaming Females. Very different interpretation but also quite good! https://open.spotify.com/track/5k5aSzB9MZZzvS97OCiyYA?si=kdY5R_aZTYSKcBiCAJxO7w 5mo
sarahbarnes I still listen to this live version every now and again. I loved this album back in the day. 5mo

TieDyeDude They are both great versions, hard to pick a favorite. While it has the undeniable feel of a Springsteen song, I don't really like his version. That Garbage/Screaming Females has a great outro! 5mo
Billypar @sarahbarnes Yeah, I haven't listened to too many whole Unplugged concerts, but this is probably my second favorite next to Nirvana's. 5mo
Billypar @TieDyeDude You know I always heard that Springsteen wrote an early version before giving it to Smith, but I didn't realize he recorded it later on. It was better than I expected, but I'm not really a Springsteen fan, so I didn't have high expectations either. 5mo
merelybookish I 💯 endorse this take! 4mo

Great idea @ljuliel!

The gift of reading was the best gift I ever got. Suddenly I could get answers to all those questions in my mind, I could learn new things, go to places all over the universe,...
I read all day, it's like breathing. I have to read for a few sentences every night, no matter how exhausted I am. I read the back of tea/cheese/... packages when there's nothing else around. Once I had to wait in the car w/o a book, so I read the 👇

julesG car's "owner's manual". I cannot go a day without reading. Honestly. I had an inflammation of my optical nerve (three times so far), each time I went blind in one eye for a few days, the doctors said I shouldn't strain the "good" eye by reading. I tried not to read, worst hour of my life. Truly. Not a joke. 5y

Deifio Thank god for audiobooks! Now if it ever happens again @julesG you can pick up an audiobook! 5y
julesG @Deifio Right. That's something to look forward to. Back when it happened, I was still very much reading physical copies only. 5y
ljuliel Jules , your comments made me happy 😊 then sad 😢. Your story about reading the car manual was funny. As for your eye issues, I‘m so sorry that happened. It must be awful , but I‘m so glad we live in a world where audiobooks are so easy to access now. They help bring reading to a lot of people who otherwise couldn‘t experience it. 5y
julesG @ljuliel Don't worry. Luckily the inflammation was spotted early on, steroid treatment took care of them, and after a few days I could see again without any problems. I still have full visibility in both eyes, although I need prescription glasses to battle my short-sightedness. 😉 5y
ljuliel That‘s good. It sounds like you‘re in excellent hands for medical issues. It helps to have a good Dr you can trust , plus medication to counteract some of your symptoms. 5y
Josilas123 Reading takes me away from this world into a different dimension and also it helped me battle some of my bad habits!!! I‘m glad you eye is in a better shape but I recommend constant checkup from hence. Thanks for the share. 5y
julesG @Josilas123 Thanks! Trust me. I'm seeing my doctors once a month. That's the (dis)advantage of having a chronic issue. 😉 5y
Josilas123 @julesG 😄 that‘s so true. You are welcome. 5y

I like the idea of this book. Because one thing happens it leads to another. That is the main concept and it all starts because Mozart wrote music. I don‘t think it is the best book of the year, but I really liked it and think it would be excellent for story time I think it might get a little boring for most kids as a nightly read.

I will read anything Mo Willems writes. So I immediately requested this from the library when I saw it was released. This is NOTHING like most of his other books. But oooooohhh.. all the feels. I was teary eyed by like the second page. So gorgeous!!! I‘m about to listen to the composition now.

ErikasMindfulShelf Looks great. Requested from library right away. 6y
