The Third Mrs. Durst
The Third Mrs. Durst | Ann Aguirre
10 posts | 13 read | 3 to read
Some people just need killing. Marlena Altizer Durst lives in her husband's shadow. He controls her every move--what she wears, the food she eats, and the friends she's allowed to make. If she disobeys, there are...consequences. And he has all the power. To outsiders, it seems that she leads a fairy-tale life. But nobody ever wonders if Cinderella was happy after she married the prince. Marlena has traded freedom and safety for luxurious imprisonment, and most days, that seems like a bad bargain. Death may be the only exit she's allowed. Just like his first wife. And his second. Unless she flips the script. Some people just need killing. Praise: "The Third Mrs. Durst is a slow, dark burn that leads to a fantastic explosion of an ending."--Victoria Helen Stone, bestselling author of Jane Doe

At 16 Marlena Altizer leaves her poverty-stricken home & family & heads to the city. Spotted by a talent scout, Marlena becomes a model alongside friend, Jenny, but Marlena is more successful. Several years later, she meets Michael Durst & they eventually marry. Michael is rich, successful, & handsome, but also jealous & controlling. From the outside her life seems perfect but on the inside it is anything but. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf Displeasing him leads to consequences not just for Marlena but he threatens her friends too & she knows he means it. You see Michael has been married before, twice in fact, & both his former wives are dead. Accidents or murder?

This is a book about a toxic marriage & abusive husband - Marlena wants out but is that all she wants? There are none-too-subtle hints from the start that there is more to the plot so the 'twist' is not really much of a

OutsmartYourShelf surprise. It was also quite slow in pace until the last third when the plot suddenly exploded into life. The problem for me is that I found it difficult to like Marlena - I felt sorry for her initially - but didn't like her. Mainly because she was also manipulative with another character & put them in danger. Definitely have no wish to re-read at any point. 2⭐

TWs: sexual content, domestic abuse, violence, blood, sexual assault.

Prompt 9: graceful

She is a former model who "trained" to be a rich man's wife so I'm going with graceful. The book was a mess though...poorly written characters, predictable and supremely unlikely plot and not well written IMO.

6/6 books pledged for the challenge

BOOK TAGS⤏ ABUSIVE/CONTROLLING HUSBAND ⤏ SECRETS & LIES ⤏ REVENGE THEME ⤏ EVERYTHING IS NOT ALWAYS AS IT SEEMS...

If this book were a puzzle...it would be missing a few pieces. It was diverting and rather compelling...but when you're all finished...a few things don't necessarily add up.

This one was not really what I expected it to be. I had high hopes for it, but it fell pretty flat. A dark, dark story of revenge with really no character development or twist. I was left with a lot of questions at the end. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This was a somewhat predictable story about a woman who knowingly enters a marriage with a highly controlling, manipulative man. It touches on themes related to spousal abuse by describing the aftermath rather than the actions themselves. There were moments where the story was interesting but, for me, it didn‘t move at a good pace. I just didn‘t find the characters appealing or sympathetic and therefore didn‘t find this to be a great read

Ann Aguirre has been an instant buy since her Razorland Series which i reread at least once a year. The Third Mrs Durst kept that going as i read this in two days (would have been hours but sadly had to work). This was so well written, i just sat back and completely enjoyed the ride. There were so many wonderful twists and surprises. The main character was smart, funny, vulnerable and held her cards very close that even the reader was left out.

This is a big nope for me.

If you want to read my review on how ridiculous this is, check out my blog. I promise it will be better than this book.

Bklover Enjoyed your review. I like a good thriller too but I will definitely skip this one! 5y
Amaryie @Bklover I had high hopes for this. But it really just was not good. The plus was that it did read fast, the downside being it was just all over a mess. 5y

I‘ve been #netgalley binging lately. This was such a fun book, lots of twists and turns. It was an easy, entertaining read. From the first page to the last, I had a hard time putting this book down. This has been a highlight of my recent ARCs and I would recommend it. It‘s out in August and would be a solid beach read.

I recieved an e-book ARC of The Third Mrs Durst from Midnight Ink, through NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. The Third Mrs Durst is 50 Shades meets Wild Things with a little Pygmalion thrown in. I throughly enjoyed the plot twists, and liked the characters, especially Joanna (all things aside, I absolutely adore her). If you enjoy intense stories that keep you guessing, with strong female characters, I would recommend this book to you.
