Forever, Erma: Best-Loved Writing From America's Favorite Humorist | Erma Bombeck
3 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
New York Times Bestseller: This anthology of Erma Bombecks most memorable and humorous essays is a tribute to one of Americas sharpest wits. When she began writing her regular newspaper column in 1965, Erma Bombecks goal was to make housewives laugh. Thirty years later, she had published more than four thousand columns, and earned countless laughsfrom housewives, presidents, and everyone in between. With grace, good humor, and razor-sharp prose, she gently skewered every aspect of the American family. This collection holds the best of her columnsnot just her famous quips, but also the heartbreaking observations that gave her writing such weight. In 1969, Erma wrote: screaming kids, unpaid bills, green leftovers, husbands behind newspapers, basketballs in the bathroom. Theyre real . . . theyre warm . . . theyre the only bit of normalcy left in this cockeyed world, and Im going to cling to it like life itself. With what Publishers Weekly calls her infectious sense of human absurdity, Erma Bombecks writing remains a timeless examination of the still-cockeyed world. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Erma Bombeck including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the authors estate.

I wanted so much to like this, but I found a lot of her humor outdated and irrelevant. I had no idea she was writing her column in the 60s. I made it 39% through before DNF.

Kaye Sadly, some of the authors ( like her, Lewis Grizzard, Andy Rooney) , etc aren‘t quite as entertaining as they once were to read, because the things going on at the time are so many years ago , the book really doesn‘t pertain as much to today‘s world. I liked them all, but it‘s hard to backtrack that many years and find them funny. 6y
WorldsOkayestStepMom @kaye yeah, I wasn't even smiling as I read them and I got to where I was dreading picking up the book. 6y
MemoirsForMe I remember reading her books ages ago. When they were funny. Too bad they didn‘t stand the test of time. ☹️ 6y
WorldsOkayestStepMom @UwannaPublishme it was still worth a shot to read! And I'm sure that for the right demographic, it would still be funny. I'm probably not in that demographic. 🙃 6y
