Gerald is a giraffe who simply can't dance. Try as he may, his long, spindly legs buckle whenever he starts to boogy. Every year he dreads going to the Great Jungle Dance - until one night when he finds his own special music...

“But Gerald simply twizzled round and finished with a bow.”
Picture book. This book is perfect for a classroom because it teaches a wonderful lesson about overcoming. I also know children love this story because I have read it to a group of preschoolers before and they love the pictures and seeing the animals dance.
Giraffes Can‘t Dance by Giles Andreae and illustrated Guy Parker-Rees, 1999. This is a wonderful story about overcoming adversity and finding yourself. The whimsical and brightly colored illustrations make the story even more fun as the animals all dance and Gerald finds his music and dance.
"We all can dance," he said, "when we find music that we love."
This book is great for discouraging bullying. It would be a great book to use for a lesson against bullies.
This book was published in 1999. The vibrant colors and flow of the words help keep a reader interested. There are many themes that are portrayed in the book as well. The view of the giraffe allows the audience to relate on a personal level.
