Marriageology: The Art and Science of Staying Together | Belinda Luscombe
6 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
A guide to staying together that combines the latest scientific data, personal anecdotes, and advice, arguing that marriage is better for your health, your finances, and your happiness, by an award-winning Time journalist. Surveying the latest science and folding it into her funny, engaging, and candid knack for storytelling, Belinda Luscombe has written a fresh and persuasive report on the state of our unions. This book examine the six major faultines that can fracture a marriage, also known as Luscombe's F-words: familiarity, fighting, family, finances, fooling around, and finding help. She presents facts, debunks myths, provides an entertaining mix of data, anecdotes, and wisdom from a wide range of approaches to married life, as well as experts and therapists of the wedding, marriage and divorce industries. Marriage-ology gives the reader something to think about and maybe try, whether the marriage in question is on the brink of collapse or just needs a bit of maintenance on the foundations.

I savored this small work of #nonfiction. I found it to be succinct, based on studies, and lighthearted all at once. The author seemed very down to earth and gave real life examples, all while citing studies, books, and other works about relationships, parenting, and many other things that affect marriage. It felt like I got all of the takeaways from about 15 other books all rolled into one easy to digest one with humor throughout. 😁

This book is solidly sourced with evidence-based research, but it isn't dry. Luscombe has a great sense of humor that had me chuckling throughout the book. She helps break down the fault lines in a 6-part alliteration that is easy to follow. I appreciated the marriage of a sociological & therapeutic approach, as well as her anecdotes relating the science to her her marriage, which helped tie in the research and advice to real life examples.
