Crandolin
Crandolin | Anna Tambour
2 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
In a medieval cookbook in a special-collections library, near-future London, jaded food and drink authority Nick Kippax finds an alluring stain next to a recipe for the mythical crandolin. He tastes it, ravishing the page. Then he disappears...So begins an 'adwentour' that quantum-leapfrogs from Central Asia in the Middle Ages to Russia under Gorbachev, from the secrets of confectionery to the agonies of making a truly great moustache, from maidens in towers to tiffs between cosmic forces. Food, music, science, fruitloopery, superstition, railways, bladder-pipes and birth-marked Soviet statesmen; all are present in an extraordinary novel that is truly 'for the adwentoursomme'.

Panpan

I'm slightly surprised I was able to finish this one. The story sounded fantastic and fulfilled categories for two of my three challenges. While I appreciate what the author tried to do and did fall for some of the characters, I don't feel like I got a full story on any of them. My experience was disjointed and confusing until about halfway in. Prior to that, I considered not finishing it; something I NEVER do. I wanted to like this! Bummer. 😕

Making (sporadic) progress on the #litsyreadingchallenge! Currently reading Crandolin for #litsyrc19 (top right corner square) which doesn't get me too much closer to a bingo, ha.
