Solovyov and Larionov
Solovyov and Larionov | Eugene Vodolazkin
6 posts | 2 read | 7 to read
Solovyov, a young scholar born into obscurity, arrives in St Petersburg to have his thesis topic handed to him: the story of General Larionov. Dismissive at first, his subject soon intrigues the young scholar, even obsesses him: this is no ordinary General. Not only did Larionov fight for the monarchist Whites during the Civil War, he did so with bloody distinction. So how did he manage to live unharmed in the Soviet Union, on a Soviet pension, cutting an imposing figure on the Yalta beaches, leaving behind a son and a volume of memoirs? The budding young historian sets off to Crimea to look for some lost pages from the General's diary, and on his journey discovers many surprises, not least the charming Zoya, who works at Yalta's Chekhov Museum. With wry humour, philosophical seriousness and a ground-breaking narrative style, Solovyov and Larionov is a genre-defying historical detective novel that explores a fascinating period of Russian history.

I. Tagged. Just brilliant writing
II. War & Peace, it took me three attempts but it really is a masterpiece. NW by Zadie Smith, I hated it until 2/3 in but it is fantastic
III. Remove. I'd prefer hardbacks to have pretty/printed bindings and no dust-jackets

Pickpick

A yng historian is researching the 'White' general Larionov who resisted the red army in post revolution civil war +then survived to live a long life whilst many around him including loyal soviets are purged. He heads to yalta for a lecture + to find the generals notes to meet wonderful characters, comic scenes but pages peppered with memoir of war and love. A brill book unknown to me but found thanks to @Moray_Reads

Im not sure if I'll finish this tonight, the perrenial dilemma of i don't want to finish the book but can't stop reading plus an easter egg of a recommendation for 'Aelita' anyway i liked this idea of a comparison with a letter arriving for dostoevsky
from Germany in 5 days yet our hero waits for a month for a letter fro Moscow -with many thanks to @Moray_Reads for this suggestion which has made for a happy weekend's reading.

It's not every writer that could make a young academic's investigations into how a White Army general lived unmolested under the Communists but Vodolazkin manages it. The minor detail of Solovyov's studies could easily become tedious but instead creates a wholly engrossing disk narrative stories and cleverly reveals the fluidity of historical narratives.

charl08 Very tempting - fascinating period of history. 5y
andrew61 With 50 pages to go i neither want this book to end nor want to finish it tonight. Many thanks for the recommendation as had not heard about this book. 5y
Moray_Reads @andrew61 isn't it excellent? I was gripped and it's the sheer quality of the writing that did it 5y
