A complicated prose style made this short novel a long read. The narrator tells the story of Christa from when she meets her in a German classroom at the height of the Nazi rule to her death at age 34 in 1964 + references in a personal account, the transition from 1 totalitarian regime to another, friendship, fragility of life + identity. I put it down worrying that too much wine has dulled my intelligence + feel i need to reread + some guideance

LeahBergen I get that feeling often, too. 🤣 2y

A beautiful descriptive book but sometimes hard to follow who was saying what. I enjoyed it, the writing is enticing and lyrical. Would I recommend it, yes is the answer

I feel like the translation made this even more obfuscative than it already is. I often found myself imagining what the original German might have said and how it might have been better phrased for English readers. It suffers the lack of an introduction for context as well.

Apart from some wonderful thoughts, this one was really too abstract for me. #1001books

This book has had me gripped from the very first page. I'm only thirty pages in but it's fantastic so far.
