The King's Grave
The King's Grave: The Search for Richard III | Michael Jones, Philippa Langley
4 posts | 6 read | 26 to read
Now with a new chapter. The official inside story of the life, death and remarkable discovery of history's most controversial monarch. On 22 August 1485 Richard III was killed at Bosworth Field, the last king of England to die in battle. His victorious opponent, Henry Tudor (the future Henry VII), went on to found one of our most famous ruling dynasties. Richard's body was displayed in undignified fashion for two days in nearby Leicester and then hurriedly buried in the church of the Greyfriars. Fifty years later, at the time of the dissolution of the monasteries, the king's grave was lost - its contents believed to be emptied into the river Soar and Richard III's reputation buried under a mound of Tudor propaganda. Its culmination was Shakespeare's compelling portrayal of a deformed and murderous villain, written over a hundred years after Richard's death. Now - in an incredible find - Richard III's remains have been uncovered beneath a car park in Leicester. The King's Grave traces this remarkable journey. In alternate chapters, Philippa Langley, whose years of research and belief that she would find Richard in this exact spot inspired the project, reveals the inside story of the search for the king's grave, and historian Michael Jones tells of Richard's fifteenth-century life and death. The result is a compelling portrayal of one of our greatest archaeological discoveries, allowing a complete re-evaluation of our most controversial monarch - one that discards the distortions of later Tudor histories and puts the man firmly back into the context of his times.

Just finished! What a good, interesting read! Definitely came out with some new insight on King Richard III and had to reevaluate some previously held beliefs on his character. Can‘t wait to read more about him!

The King's Grave: The Search for Richard III | Michael Jones, Philippa Langley

I want to read this but one of my pet peeves is books that jump around. So I think I will read every other chapter and then go back and read the others so that the book is pretty much chronological.

Pickpick

#Royals I was fascinated with all the news surrounding "the King in the parking lot" and the digging up of poor old Dickie. This book did a good job relating how a few educated guesses and some plain old-fashioned luck led to the discovery of Richard III's remains. #ReadJanuary

Libby1 I really liked this book, too. Did you see the documentary where they were undertaking the architectural dig in the car park? SO exciting. 8y
Moray_Reads And the huge controversy about where he would be reburied and what it would look like! 8y
AmandaL That sounds fascinating. Added! 8y

The primary author of this book is the redoubtable Philippa Langley.

This book is a case of truth being stranger than fiction. This is a nonfiction history book but I think it's accessible because the story is fascinating. Give it a try!

Also, don't I have some cool history books? 😎

rubyslippersreads I am drooling over these! 👑💕 8y
LeahBergen I loved this book. I read it right after Sharon Kay Penman's The Sunne in Splendour (and your history books ARE great! 👍🏼) 8y
LauraBrook It sounds fascinating! Your books are outstanding - maybe I'll group my history together like yours? 8y

Libby1 Me too, @rubyslippersreads ! I'll look into that book, @LeahBergen . @LauraBrook - yes, I like to categorise and alphabetise all of my books! Must be the frustrated former librarian in me! 8y
ValerieAndBooks 😍nice!! 8y
kspenmoll Remember when the find came out in the news- book sounds fascinating- add to ever going TBR mountain! ! 8y
Libby1 Thanks, @ValerieAndBooks . @kspenmoll - this story holds endless fascination for me. As a lover of history how earth shattering is it that we can now categorically solve a mystery like this and actually see what he looked like? Paintings can always be doctored or embellished but the bones don't lie. (Hey! That sounds like the title of a crime novel! 😁) 8y
