This absorbing and thought-provoking memoir looks at 11 of her cases (details anonymised for privacy reasons) to set out the limitations of the justice system together with how it changed the respective defendants lives and the lessons that Langford took from them and in the increasingly crowded legal market stands out for looking at the English Family Court.

3.5 ⭐ An interesting look into the UK law system and the cases presented daily involving people from all walks of life. Written in an accessible style with good footnotes to explain the law, Sarah invites us into her world where she has had to overcome her own values & beliefs to defend and support people through the law system. Enjoyed this book and the range of cases presented were varied keeping my interest.

Sarah defends not only her clients but more importantly for all of our benefit the institution she works for. She's smart and passionate. I hope her book sparks more respect and appreciation for the courts.

Probably my final book for the year. The author has anonymised / amalgamated cases from her experience as a barrister to provide a painful yet very human view of the criminal justice system. At times her language can be a tad creative writing esque but it was still very readable and very enlightening. Family court case chapters were pretty rough to read.

Finished Eve Was Shamed last night and immediately drawn to the tagged book in Waterstones today. Makes me realise how much I understand of the US criminal justice system vs our own....
