Come with Me
Come with Me | Helen Schulman
6 posts | 8 read | 5 to read
From Helen Schulman, the acclaimed author of the New York Times bestseller This Beautiful Life, comes another "gripping, potent, and blisteringly well-written story of family, dilemma, and consequence" (Elizabeth Gilbert)—a mind-bending novel set in Silicon Valley that challenges our modern constructs of attachment and love, purpose and fate. Recommended by Vogue, the BBC, Southern Living, Pure Wow, Hey Alma, Esquire, EW, Refinery 29, Bust, and Read It or Weep "What do you want to know?" Amy Reed works part-time as a PR person for a tech start-up, run by her college roommate’s nineteen-year-old son, in Palo Alto, California. Donny is a baby genius, a junior at Stanford in his spare time. His play for fortune is an algorithm that may allow people access to their "multiverses"—all the planes on which their alternative life choices can be played out simultaneously—to see how the decisions they’ve made have shaped their lives. Donny wants Amy to be his guinea pig. And even as she questions Donny’s theories and motives, Amy finds herself unable to resist the lure of the road(s) not taken. Who would she be if she had made different choices, loved different people? Where would she be now? Amy’s husband, Dan—an unemployed, perhaps unemployable, print journalist—accepts a dare of his own, accompanying a seductive, award-winning photographer named Maryam on a trip to Fukushima, the Japanese city devastated by tsunami and meltdown. Collaborating with Maryam, Dan feels a renewed sense of excitement and possibility he hasn’t felt with his wife in a long time. But when crisis hits at home, the extent of Dan’s betrayal is exposed and, as Amy contemplates alternative lives, the couple must confront whether the distances between them in the here and now are irreconcilable. Taking place over three non-consecutive but vitally important days for Amy, Dan, and their three sons, Come with Me is searing, entertaining, and unexpected—a dark comedy that is ultimately both a deeply romantic love story and a vivid tapestry of modern life.

I came away from this book ANGRY I even read it. The writing is so bad it‘s almost offensive, the characters are crap, the plot...goes nowhere until some random character gets killed off. Man if you want to read my full angry rant the review is on my good reads. I can‘t waste anymore energy talking about this hot piece of garbage.

Now to continue with this atrocious book...someone tell me to stop so I don‘t feel bad lol

Hope everyone is having a great Monday 🌞🌻

vivastory You should bail if you're not enjoying it. I very rarely dnf books, but you can set it aside and see how you feel about it in a few days 5y

Moonprismpower So I listen to an absolutely horrible not pc and very insulting to everyone podcast called Poorly Read and its these two brothers who read and make fun of Harry Potter. And they hate Mrs. Weasley because she was so mean to Hermione at one point and I don‘t agree bc I think she is awesome but I laugh at this podcast. But only listen if you are okay with these two guys making fun of every character, and talking about sex. 😂😕 5y
magyklyXdelish @Moonprismpower I‘ll have to check that out it sounds funny! 5y

Come with me is the book I‘m currently reading. The other 2 just came in the mail today. I mean...cmon how could u not want to read that middle book just based on the title alone lol that will be my first bizarro Fiction one.

I‘m not looking forward to the current read after seeing a lot of the reviews but here I go anyway 😬

LiteraryinPA What is the middle one about? What a crazy title! 5y
magyklyXdelish @LiteraryinLititz a boy has a crush on a weird girl at school with a squeaky voice and spiders in her hair. Everyone thinks she‘s weird but he‘s in love however whenever they go on a date at Dairy Queen her whole fucking face explodes. He thinks he can handle her situation but the more he gets to know her the weirder it turns out to be. He realizes to be with her he has to become just as strange. 5y

The synopsis got me all excited for some speculative/sci-fi goodness, but this is just boring drama with characters I can't stand. Where are the multiverses?! I skimmed some other reviews to see if it was going to redeem itself, but nah. DNF.
