This is probably one of the best YA/Teen novels I‘ve read in a long time. The story is told in two timelines, which allowed for the story of 1950s pulp to be put into context for a modern teen audience. However, I found myself losing interest in the 2017 characters, often wanting to get back to the 1955 timeline. ⬇️

Wow what a lovely, interesting, history packed book! Likable characters, good development, solid obsession material 🖤 the sheer amount of information this book casually dropped was amazing, made me wildly curious to research a bunch of stuff! Not to mention it added a few titles to my tbr list, which is a definite plus!

The lesbian pulp fiction genre is an important element at the centre of this engaging #audiobook with alternating storylines. Both timelines follow lesbian teens who live in Washington DC: Janet in 1955 and Abby in 2017. Believable characters: always a plus. Love the way the contemporary group of friends are all shades of queer and involved in civil activism. #LGBTQ

About 100 pages in and I really like this book. Finally sitting down to relax. It‘s been a rough week for our dog. Trying to figure out how to manage his seizures. A queer book and episodes of Friends should help.

Finding a story that feels like yours can be difficult. I feel like finding the right book for you can be more impactful & important than I can actually express. I liked how Talley emphasized that, writing about how words bring people together. I didn't love the characters (especially not Abby), but I found their journeys interesting & Abby's particularly compelling. Her struggles w/her family may stick with me even longer than the other themes.

Update - So sad to DNF this one! I was really looking forward to it. I got over half way and realized that, though the characters are diverse, no one has a personality. I didn‘t really know any of them. Or care enough to know what happens to them. That and all the repetitive paragraphs (someone needed a better editor) have me saying peace out.

So I‘m back on Litsy more because of the website (work bans phones, but they haven‘t banned the Litsy site yet!), and now it‘s back to “Ooo that book looks good! Wait, I have a Barnes and Noble coupon!” You are all bad influences and I love you all for it.

Drove up to West Va to visit my grandma. I think I got my reading bug from her. Still reading Pulp and I asked her if she read pulp novels in the 50s... she said she read EVERYTHING.

So far, the most exciting new-to-me book today is Pulp by Robin Talley, which explores queer pulp novels through history. Can‘t wait to read this.

“Pulp” is a very smart book. As concept art, I loved it. Abby Zimet, Talley‘s protagonist & a high school senior working on her final creative writing project, talks a lot about “subverting tropes.” Talley does this in her own YA novel beautifully; it‘s (partly) about teens falling out of love, standing in direct opposition to the many, many love stories found in the genre.

Stylistically, though, I felt differently.

I‘m kind-of not into this book. But will I stop reading? Of course not. I haven‘t unlocked that level of bibliophile achievement yet. 🙈

This is something I genuinely strive to remember when my husband & I get into it. It‘s *so* important.

I love being right. Like, love it. 😅😆 And I‘m good at winning arguments. Being wordy gives you that edge. 😉🔪 BUT... I love him more. He‘s a sensitive soul, so I can immediately tell when I need to back-off. And I do it (sometimes not immediately...but *eventually*). Cause that‘s love. Preserve & protect. 💕

I don't do well with the whole "pining away for the ex" business. But it improved as the story went on.

This #24in48 readathon is amazing and I have finished another book! Whoa! Pulp is a very sweet novel, and the two storylines together worked very well. I am a sucker for these kinds of storylines where history comes to life in meaningful ways and I love that this book exists for queer teens as a reminder that being out in the 50s was a very different process, and terrifying. #amreading #queerlit

Like good YA, this book is honest and true. I loved the parallel stories and the way the author brought them together. Definitely worth a read!

Another week, another audio book. I am becoming a bigger fan of audios with each one I listen to!

I loved Janet as a character and I preferred her chapters overall. I liked Abby and related her a lot at the beginning but closer to the end she was starting to act a little selfishly. Rest of my review in the comments
