In a remote corner of Pennsylvania's Blue Ridge Mountains, a woman befriends a fugitive from Uzbekistan, setting in motion this suspenseful, atmospheric, politically-charged debut. After a freak car accident left her widowed, Kathleen has retreated to Pennsylvania's Blue Ridge Mountains, where she works in an isolated corner of the state park. There she meets a stranger who seems to be hiding from the authorities in his native Uzbekistan.

EadieB As the violent secrets of their pasts unfold, the difference between good and evil proves more complicated than we might think . . . and a surprising final twist casts Kathleen in a new light altogether. This beautifully written book has themes of betrayal and forgiveness. It is a book that you will either love or hate the ending as there is no in-between! 3y

Day 1 of #12booksof2020

A very moving read about two wounded people listening to eachother, set in a gorgeous snowy landscape. It was my first 5 star read this year and it seems a lifetime ago.

Andrew65 Stacked, this looks a good book! 4y
EadieB @BarbaraBB Looks good. I love The Blue Ridge Mountains. They start in PA and go all the way to VA. 4y
BarbaraBB @EadieB I‘ve never been there but it sounds very beautiful 🤍 4y

EadieB @BarbaraBB Yes it's a state park and they have built roads high in the mountains with places to stop along the way where you can look down over gorgeous scenery. Breathtaking! 4y

BarbaraBB @writerlibrarian That would be a perfect choice! 4y

#JanuaryStats #JanuaryWrapUp

In January I read 15 books, which is very good for me. I made a good start with the challenges too.
One five stars read (the tagged one), two four stars.

All the others were 3,5 stars at the most, so here‘s to quality instead of quantity for February!

#BookReport 05/20

I finished Virginia Woolf this week, that I started a few weeks ago.
Furthermore I read and loved both Ways to Hide in Winter and Golden State this week.
The last one was Oval, a weird but enjoyable book.

Cinfhen Another solid week 💗🙌🏻 5y
Ruthiella I‘m reading Oval now - about 1/2 way through...jury is still out for me!😀 5y
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella Looking forward to your verdict 😀 5y

thebluestocking I was planning on not reading Oval or We Cast a Shadow, but I may need to at least keep an eye out for copies based on the reviews. 💙 5y
Ruthiella Okay, finished with Oval and “weird but enjoyable” works! The story moved way too slow for my tastes but the author did have many astute and sharp observations on Germany vs US culture, capitalism and consumerism and the like. 😀 5y
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella I thought so too. It was pretty intelligent, especially the dialogues I thought. 5y

This book made me hold my breath from the first til the last page. I felt like I was there, in snowy Pennsylvania, with the two wounded people who are the main characters in this book. Because of what they both went through they are able to not judge but to listen to one another and give eachother space.
A beautiful and sad book 🤍🤍, highly recommended.

1. I've got a thing for Flo Rida and Nicki Minaj, even though my fave music is rock/alternative.

2. Fall, without a doubt. Cool, crisp air, pumpkin and apple everything, Halloween, football, and hoodies!

3. Psychological thrillers.

4. Not sure yet. My honey is taking me out to celebrate finishing my first week of radiation 😊.

5. On it!

Spent several hours in the car yesterday. Started this new audiobook and LOVE it. This book seemed to get less hype than others last year but it has really pulled me in. I can't wait to finish it! (I just need 5 hours and 50 minutes of nothing to do)

Tamra It‘s a good one! I sped right thru it. 6y
TheNerdyProfessor @Tamra I'm so glad to hear it. I don't usually like audiobooks but this one is really well done. I can't wait to learn all of their secrets! 6y
Tamra @TheNerdyProfessor I read it in print, but I can totally see how audio would be great too! 6y
Redwritinghood I agree that this one should have gotten more attention. It‘s quite good. 6y

It seems like the perfect time to read this considering the current weather! This short book deals with the difficult and complex task of forgiveness. People do bad things. Sometimes, they do really bad things. But life has no do-overs. Instead of focusing on how to forgive yourself, the focus here is how you see others after you know the bad things they have done. How do you forgive or ignore the past and move forward today? 4⭐️

Tamra Glad you liked it! 6y

This slow-burn book starts in a scarcely populated mountain stopover in the off-season when a mysterious man appears. Midway details are revealed about the man and about Kathleen's history with domestic abuse (the topic the author set out to explore, so definitely avoid if triggering for you.) There are some questions raised but not answered by the author that could have disturbing conclusions (nature of evil, etc.) Setting is great, brr.

This was so good. And so underrated. It‘s very hard to put down. What makes someone a good or bad person? How much can you forgive? This one has lots of layers and it‘s very well written. It really should be more popular.

Cinfhen I‘m intrigued ~ thanks for posting and sharing 6y

I‘m “helping” the tween with his probability homework. Ugh, math. Lucky for both of us, he really knows his stuff, so I‘m reading while he works. I need to know just who this stranger is and what he is running away from. I NEED to know!

One hell of a debut novel! Damaged people with damaging stories that slowly reveal the duality of human nature. There is nothing superficial about the writing, which does justice to the issues of domestic violence and torture in detention. camps. Anxious to read more from St. Vincent in the future!

This is an incredibly nuanced literary thriller that relies on complex human dynamics instead of the usual gimmicks. I absolutely loved it. The characters exist in a gray area between good and bad. They do what they think is right at the time, and suffer the consequences of their misjudgments. They attempt to overcome the chasm between who they want to be and who they really are by seeking redemption and companionship in the unlikeliest places.

Well-ReadNeck Ooooh. Sold. Just put it on hold at my library. 6y

Good morning from Maine! Yesterday was a balmy 55 degrees, now today it‘s 33 out. Ah, New England winters. And speaking of winter, this book is AMAZING and deserves a lot more attention. It‘s gorgeously written and beautifully sad, and really thought-provoking. By the time I finished, my heart looked like Pinhead‘s face. RELATED: All their books are 40% off on their today. (They didn‘t ask me to say that, I just love them.) ❤️❄️📚
