A high school senior attempts to salvage her reputation among her Ivy Leagueobsessed classmates by writing their college admissions essays and in the process learns big truths about herself in this mesmerizing debut novel-in-verse, perfect for fans of Gayle Forman and Sonya Sones. Nic Chen refuses to spend her senior year branded as the girl who cheated on her charismatic and lovable boyfriend. To redefine her reputation among her Ivy Leagueobsessed classmates, Nic begins writing their college admissions essays. But the more essays Nic writes for other people, the less sure she becomes of herself, the kind of person she is, and whether her moral compass even points north anymore. Provocative, brilliant, and achingly honest, 500 Words or Less explores the heartbreak and hope that marks the search for your truest self.

HS senior Ni Chen decides to offer college admissions essay writing, not so much for the $300 she earns each time, but to redeem herself as a person. Her mom abandoned her and her dad is emotionally inaccessible. Great YA novel in verse.

“When someone doesn‘t have an interest in you, you stop having an interest in yourself. “

This quote really hit me hard.

This put a unique twist on YA. I liked it. Three hours on audio.

I read this for #Booked2020 - YA by POC
#DoubleSpin book #BookSpinBingo

This was okay. A quick listen but it didn‘t sound like it was written in verse to me. Nice cheats on her boyfriend and he transfers schools (really?) and the whole school blames her. She seemed to love him more after they broke up then when they were together..

I‘m just over YA and only read this for prompts

BarbaraTheBibliophage Meh. Hope it wasn‘t too long. Maybe we need to give YA a break in 2021 prompts. I much prefer middle grade if I can‘t read adult. 4y
Laughterhp Also I keep forgetting it‘s the Readathon this week for #AwesomeAugust 3rd book finished I believe @Andrew65 4y
Laughterhp @BarbaraTheBibliophage Luckily it was only 3 hours long. I‘m starting to prefer middle grade too if I don‘t read adult. 4y

Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 4y
Cinfhen Ha, what we don‘t do for challenges!!! YA is usually not my thing at all but lately for challenges I read a few and they were all REALLY GOOD!!! I was so pleasantly surprised 4y
TheAromaofBooks YA is really hit or miss for me. Sometimes I feel like an author tries too hard to make it YA, and instead just comes through has angsty and not very interesting. 4y

Both #BookSpin and #DoubleSpin books are both audiobooks this month. I‘m really excited for both these books. The tagged book I‘m using for Coming of Age story for #SummerFun and YA by POC for #Booked2020. I‘m also really excited to get into the first book of dust.

TheAromaofBooks I quite like the cover for The Book of Dust. 4y

Day 16 of @bookriot‘s #riotgrams is #TBR. Here‘s some of my to reads for the next few weeks. I‘m still struggling to get used to the having a baby reality of reading - this stack reflects a pre baby reading weeks 😜 I‘m sure these will take three times as long now!

⭐️3/5
I expected more from this book. It was good, but not memorable. I also feel like the issues were touched on but not fully fleshed out. Interesting idea, though

RebL I wanted this book to reflect the frustration we experienced last application season. Hmm. 6y

And the icing on the good reading day cake was that I finished a book! Yay!

A novel mostly written in verse was exactly what I needed. While not without flaws, this book touches on some important issues and, though the main character may not always make the best choices, I found her extremely relatable.
