The Ecliptic
The Ecliptic | Benjamin Wood
The mesmerising new novel from the acclaimed author of The Bellwether Revivals: a rich and immersive story of love, obsession, creativity and disintegration. On a forested island off the coast of Istanbul stands Portmantle, a gated refuge for beleaguered artists. There, a curious assembly of painters, architects, writers and musicians strive to restore their faded talents. Elspeth 'Knell' Conroy is a celebrated painter who has lost faith in her ability and fled the dizzying art scene of 1960s London. On the island, she spends her nights locked in her blacked-out studio, testing a strange new pigment for her elusive masterpiece. But when a disaffected teenager named Fullerton arrives at the refuge, he disrupts its established routines. He is plagued by a recurring nightmare that steers him into danger, and Knell is left to pick apart the chilling mystery. Where did the boy come from, what is 'The Ecliptic', and how does it relate to their abandoned lives in England?

Friends and family converged in my hometown this past weekend, so I spent a lot of time with a 5 and 3 year old and also did some touristy things. I still managed to spend about 15 minutes in my favorite bookstore though, where I found this. I usually can‘t resist books set in artists‘ colonies or schools.

I am at a loss as to how to describe or evaluate this compulsive and well-written book-it's a fascinating exploration of the artistic process and what happens when inspiration is lacking and isolation and desperation takes over. I would love to hear what other readers make of this highly original novel. I would definitely recommend it.

Not posted for such a long time but I'm almost done with this wonderfully written book & will be sorry to finish it & return it to the library-I loved The Bellwether Revivals and recommended it to everyone and I will be doing the same with this novel-hope Mr Wood is busy writing another original tale!

If I had chosen differently, and carried out my plan to take a factory job alongside my mother, I might never have painted again. But how much worse off would I have been to live without art than to have it consume me and spit out my bones?

Captivating novel about art, love, loss and the boundaries of reality and fantasy. I read this slowly and enjoyed every bit of Wood's writing. Looking forward to reading more by him. Must read for all art lovers.
